Sheena, I remember that from my 7 years of Med Tech training in England. IF i made notes during the lecture...and rewrote them later in the week...I actually remembered the stuff. Even 55 years later, I remember a lot of what I learned. Yes...outrageously out of date, current med techs say "you did WHAT?', but I remember what we did, why, and the good and bad of the tests.
Of course these days we make shopping lists, which are left at home on the counter. 95% of the list is remembered.
Thank God, in my school in England cursive was an unknown. However it was extremely important to know how to write letters, and of primary importance was how to hold the pen and pencil correctly! I cringe when I see how the youndters today hold them
Remember, Sheena, when we were all young we leaRNT THE CORRECT WAY TO ADDRESS A bISHOP, aRCHBISHOP, eARL, pRINCE, dUKE ETC. AS PART OF THE WRITING CLASS.
Lol yes. I have an old Collins Dictionary I keep that has all the correct forms of address in the back, right down to the Vicar! Of course the map of the world is still mainly pink as well lol
We didn't do cursive, but writing had to be neat and use of pencils, as opposed to ink pens, was not allowed. I still sometimes use a proper pen with ink if I want to write a special card. It's strange, my writing is awful now but if I use a pen it automatically improves.
That study also said that many kids leave school today only able to print as they never get as far as what my g-granddaughter refers to as 'joined writing' - they transition at a very early age from printing to keyboarding.
Much has changed, some better, some not. I visited my old boarding school and could not believe the freedom they have. One of the housemistresses had a lovely basket (done with a quilted lining) and she told me she goes round the dorms at night collecting the cell 'phones. When I laughed she said it didn't really do anything, none of the ones in the basket worked, all the girls had two 'phones, one for the basket and one for use lol
Take a look at my web site, there is a pic of a dormitory there in such a mess that we would have been severely punished ! I mean the 'severely' bit as well lol
Me, three. People keep asking me to join, but I just don't have time for one more place to check for new messages!
LOL! Just today a coworker was telling me about someone at her other job who had pleaded with her to come in early "so she could have supper with her dad". So my coworker, trying to be nice, does just that. The girl doesn't show up as scheduled the next morning so they called her and she was nearly incoherent. My coworker checked on FB and someone had posted how the other girl had been out with friends and gotten very drunk! That will be the last time she puts any effort into helping that girl!
I belong to several yahoo stitching groups....but like this one because of the "lively" discussions. I like when people voice their opinions and disagree at times. Reminds me of squabbling with my two sisters......sort of the "we can bash each other, but you can't" way of thinking.
I think most of the yahoo groups are over-moderated ( such a word??).......and I get tired of the "sheep mentality"........everyone agrees and is, it seems, are afraid to go against the crowd. Everyone will say how great your piece is.....even if you stitched a picture of a dog turd. Here people will give an opinion, or suggest a better way.
The other reason for the decline is that newbies do not know of the existence of usenet. Many of the ISPs have given up supporting them, or they certainly have in Canada, so if you were not around in time to know about giganews, datemas, news.individual, eternal-september, apn, you're never going to find it.
