Point well taken--there is no problem with identifying people by ethnic origin as long as it is done with sensitivity, and because, as Brat pointed out, we were into race, ethnicity, culture and geography it was getting mixed up. Asian is not a race of people, nor is African American. That kind of sweeping categorization has been used in the past to discriminate and stereotype--not saying that anyone here was doing that, but because it has been done, I like to be careful.

No problem with saying where you come from, and where other people come from, in terms of heritage, so long as it is done accurately and with respect. .

I thought that Israel was part of the Middle East -- HMMM, I never really thought about which **continent** the Middle East was part of. Strange the things we sort of "know" but don't know! I haven't really been following this thread but the few posts I have looked at talk about "nationality" which is far different from "ethnicity". The two are not necessarily related, especially when you are talking about a country like Israel which has resident citizens who have come from all over the world. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

True -- especially if I was actually CORRECTING people, just tossing my tuppence into the fray :-). I was watching something on TLC and they mentioned the NEAR East which made me realize there is the Far East (China, Japan....) the Middle East (various countries like Iraq & Iran and I'm not sure what else) and the Near East (which is probably where Israel belongs, not with the Middle East). What is Russia (the old USSR, not all of the new independent countries) considered? It's so huge that it covers all of the above. Do we have a geography teacher in the group? I'm sure I knew this stuff once upon a time but it's gone the way of the State Capitols and Past Presidents -- sorry LOL! CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Umm, I would hope that just about anyone who watches any sort of news is aware that the majority of people who have immigrated to Israel have done so because they are of the Jewish faith. Which brings up one of my pet peeves -- people who think that nationality of the people of Israel is Jewish and not Israeli. Jewish is a religion, NOT a nationality. Israeli is a nationality, NOT a religion. Then again, these are likely the same folks who say that people from Italy are EYEtalian! OOOO -- I guess I'm picking nits with Elizabeth now :-). I hope you are right. And a bow to you for being able to reconsider, and rethink an argument, something that we could all do from time to time. (they didn't invent GoogleGoggle because everybody on the net is entirely reasonable all the time) Hey, google Altoid Prayer Wheel--there is a video on YouTube that shows how to make a Tibetan Buddhist prayer wheel from a recycled Altoid tin. I thought of you when I saw it--a bit of modern creativity added to an old spiritual tradition.

Then there is India which is referred to as a "sub-continent". Not being a Geography maven, I guess that is because of its size and the way so much of it sort of sticks out into the ocean. I once saw a tee shirt that said "Save Pangia" (pr was it Godwanaland?) which I think is rather humorous :-). CiaoMeow >^;;^<
