Using the Cloth {print or Weave] to create Elaborate stitches

Many a time when I see an interesting printed or woven cloth i feel that i can elaborate it with embroidery , using the form of the printed cloth or the weave as base or starting point to develope another form or figure ,,, I have some friends and colleagues who are also Great in using cloth base for further work . mirjam

I'm glad you brought this up as I was just thinking along these lines myself while eyeing my closet. I have a linen blouse I no longer wear. It has a light putty colored backgound with an over print of small leaves in subtle earth tones, all very light. It is a count I could easily stitch. Just trying to think of what to do with it. You are an inspiration!

I've stitched on an old linen table cloth with success. It was an uneven weave - something like 30x35 threads to the inch or about that. There is a designer named Gigi - you may have heard of her. She stitches on linen sheets. However, I wonder what count those would be? There is a limit to my eyes can see.

Deb i don`t know anything about that desidner , Sorry,,, also when working on old cloth , [and as i mentioned in my First post] , i was not reffering to the Thread Count ,[and most much washed cloth woild be too stiff anyway] , i was reffering to some print or Woven Feature [and Hence a more Visible pattern to work upon ....I reffer to printed/ woven squraes lines forms like circles leaves etc,, and enhance on those ,, mirjam

When I was playing with appliqué and quilting, I decorated the edge of a piece by doing satin and rope stitch right over the existing paisley pattern. It made each little teardrop stand out nicely. If I must say so myself (see me blush) it looked really great.

Actually, I found a little swatch of damask in a stash of fabrics and wondered about trying something similar! Cheryl

I think damask would be perfect for that kind of thing. Go for it!

ps-Did I say how delighted I am that your son is back to "normal." That's if there really is a normal for a teenage boy !!! lol

At the sew/quilt/craft festival, there's a guy who sells specialty fibers (hologram, variegated, etc.) One of his display pieces, he took a print of lavendar roses, and machine stitched right over some of the printed petals with purple hologram thread.

Of course, you know it doesn't take that to persuade me to buy hologram thread....

Well, he's still got 2 weeks with the boot, and he's making me NUTS.

And I don't think normal and teenager can be used in the same sentence... C

Mirjam and others

When you use old cloths (linens, etc.), are they merely backgrounds for other stitching or do you embellish, enhance, etc., an existing pattern?

Another Anne i do both , sometimes on the same cloth and some time i only embelish or only enhance ,, it all depends on the cloth and on my mood ,,,, mirjam
