What is orts?

It sounds like I'm one of the few who have made the Christmas ornies from orts and like them! (lol) I save the orts from all of the projects I work on during the year then stuff clear ornies a few weeks before Christmas. I put all of them in a large bowk, piled one on top of the other. Maybe it is the collection that helps them to look attractive because I do have to admit that a few of them are not the prettiest. But my point in saving them is to reminisce about the things I stitched and that purpose is served.

This year I have been stitching for a new grandbaby and some designs I really like so I'm particularly looking forward to making the additions for this year. I haven't been on RCTN in years but meet up with many of you on other sites. Nice to be back! Lauren

My own interpretation:

Overly Redundant Thread Snipps

No, snippets are the bits that are long enough to keep handy until the piece is done, but are tossed in the ort jar at that point because they're not really long enough to bother passing on to another project.

I have an old mayo jar (actually, since I got it from Mom, it's an old MW [Ick. Ack. Ptui.] jar) that I toss my orts and former snippets into, and scavenged through it when I stitched a third birth sampler for an online friend and gave her an ornament containing snippets and orts from the samplers for all three of her daughters.

Thanks Darla. Now I know that snippets go in the snippets jar and orts are what go into the little canister that gets emptied every so often and is marked odds and ends. It's really very important to know the difference between snippets and orts and I shall be very sure never ever to confuse the two again.

Wow I feel admonished and totally lacking in all of the social graces lol Don't ask me how much I care though, the answer is unprintable.

No need to print it--I think I can fill in the blanks without the written word.

And here I was wondering if it was really unprintable or just impolite. *grin*

That makes me wonder what they would look like if you used them (sparingly) in handmade paper. Of course, that would involve all the mess of papermaking....

It is a good idea - when you're in the mess mood. Think of the great labels for your handmade goods that could be made. Hmmmmm......

I was wondering what the O R T S stood for. Makes sense anyway.

I have a pretty, clear glass candy jar that I put mine in. For traveling I use 35 mm film containers. Empty Rx plastic bottles with the labels removed would work too. I'm afraid to carry small glass ones around. I'm too rough on bags of stuff when traveling.

Many Blessings to you and yours,

The meaning of the word 'ort' is: 1.. A small scrap or leaving of food after a meal is completed. Often used in the plural. 2.. A scrap; a bit In needlework we refer to those bits of left over floss as orts. I also like Barbara's interpretation :)
