Where is everybody?

I have seen so few postings the last few days! Is everybody gone, or is my computer acting up again?

My other newsgroups seem to be thriving, so I can't blame the computer. I guess everyone is huddled up by the fireplace, stitching their hearts out!!

(waving) We're just thawing out here in the prairies!! And I think some of us are watching the Olympics. My Stitch and Bitch group (demurely unnamed in the church bulletin as the priest objects to the term "bitch", but proud emblazoned on the calendar under that name) meets for the second time this week, so I am looking forward to that. As suggested by the helpful people on RCTN, we are focussing on enjoying our time together to begin with--have the teakettle boiling and the coffee on. And cookies, of course. I think I'll pick up some Peeke Freans this week--they seem to be the quintessential cookie for a cuppa. I bought Thea Dueck's Sweden International Heart on the weekend, charmed by the little Dala horse on it, and might make that my project this time--there is an interesting open stitch on it--, although I have some calligraphed book plates long overdue and could take them. Well, it's nice too see you are still out there. I'm ready to start a new project and don't know where to begin! There are so many unstarted projects and UFO's - isn't it nice to have so much to choose from? I recently acquired some of the Brambly Hedge mouse designs, and they are a cheerful Springy thing to begin.

It's still pretty cold out there even though it's sunny. My poor bulbs thought Spring had arrived a couple of weeks ago when it went to 58 and began poking up leaves, and now it has been 0-7 at night so they are totally confused and not a little frizzled.

Guess I'll go burrow through the stash and see what calls to me. Happy stitching to all!

While I was in Palm Desert at a watercolor workshop, (Bridget Austin,) I was given bags and bags of red grapefruit and Meyer lemons. What does one do with such largess? I have made marmelade and marmelade and marmelade; am now eating grapefruit and freezing lemon juice. Time to stitch? Hah.

You`ll be disgustingly healthy with all that vitamin "C". By the way - you DO spell Marmelade that way - but only if you`re German! ;-P Hee hee!

I told you - have a roadside stall, before it gets too hot and melts it.

Dawne -

Enjoy your stitching group! At church, we refer to ours unofficially as "stitch and bitch", but in "official" parlance - weekly bulletin, etc. - it's called "Stitchfest."

Working my new job, less time to stitch, so less to talk about.

I am working on a TW when I do Xst, but lately the knitting urge has been a lot stronger than the Xst urge.

Me, I'm still around, but quieter than I used to be. The 2004-2005 school year saw me gain a half-time job *and* start grad school... on top of the running around with/for the two kids and hubby.

The only time I've had to stitch (almost) in the last year and a half (since Aug. 2004) has been at the Renaissance Festival where I work end of August through most of October. Hey, at least I get to work there. And I have a very big, period-type slate-type frame to use there now... so I actually get people coming up to see what I'm doing... *including* guys (I knew there was a reason I went for the coat-of-arms design :-)

I peek in here as often as I can, but not nearly often as I'd like... and still have to skim over just about everything, because of lack of time.

Just a bit over a year to go on the grad thing... then I go for a "real" teaching job. And *maybe* I'll get a chance to stitch again.

Liz, what coat-of-arms are you doing? I'm cross-stitching a family coat-of-arms for my son in law, using a computer-generated copy, at one stitch per pixel. It's about 270 x 340 stitches, and I'm doing it over 2 on

36-count linen.

I'm using scroll bars, as my short arms would never reach far enough under anything this size!

Have you tried stitching it upside down, Joyce? In fact I find I`m more accurate doing it that way, since you can`t see what`s coming quite so well, and don`t make assumptions that prove wrong and have to be unpicked! LOL!

Sir Thomas Kytson, the elder (early-mid 1500s), of Hengrave Hall, near Bury-St. Edmund's.

It's being stitched in wools (yeah, I'm allergic... went through a lot to find which would bug me least, and I keep gloves in my basket... just in case my hands start to get too annoyed) on linen canvas. 14 count I think?.. small, but not tiny. Simple basketweave, though I'll be adding in some backstitch or something similar to finish it off eventually.. years down the road.

Hardest part is recognizing and dealing with the fact that it *is* being worked on out of doors (almost only... not working it at home, there are more allergy issues if I am in still air with it), in an area that is often dusty... *very* dusty... and my hand often get quite sweaty.

Well, that and the canvas is 20-something inches across... making the frame about 32" IIRC. So while I wisely started from the center of the design, it's a bit of a challenge for my length-challenged arms to reach still. It'll be better by the 2008 season. I should have enough of the center filled in by then that I can work from whichever edge is closest at the time.

I've had it on the scroll bars for the couple of years I've been doing it, (off and on), and can see the end now, so it wouldn't be worth changing the frame. One thing that's very good about scroll bars is that the side pieces can be taken off and used with other bars, leaving the stitching attached.

The scroll bars are about 30", and being held very well by my Lowery. One of the best buys I ever made!

I'd love to see you working on it! I've never seen any of the shows you all describe. Of course, for that you need to use wool, and I'm sorry you're allergic to it. What will happen to it when it's finished?

My cs and DMC c of a is nearly finished, and unique, so I'm sure my sil will be thrilled with it, probably for his birthday in July. If it's to be framed, my DD will do it, but I'm thinking of suggesting an old-fashioned-looking wall hanging. I'll have to find out more about that sort of finishing.

I'm insane enough that when I finish, it's destined to become a seat cushion (as I claim it will, while working on it)... and *may* be used at the faire (depends.. that's a bunch of years from now) but will almost definitely be going to our wonderful leaders who play Sir Thomas and Lady Kytson at Md. Renaissance Festival.

I'm going to try to show it off a bit first here and there (and I'm sure they'll let me do so even if it's after they're given it :-)... but I don't plan to keep this one... either (I *think* I *might* own one finished by me piece... and there is one waiting for bell pull finishing... but somehow everything I've made seems to go out the door, with the exception of a few crocheted afghans, two baby blankets, and an old Dr. Who type knit scarf).

Depends - how many of the games did you have to get up while it was full dark, drive to the rink, get the skates tied, to discover the seat heat isn't working, change kid, drive to different rink, repeat ad ifinitem!! LOL

Hey, there's an idea ... you two change places for a couple weeks. Cheryl come out here to thaw out, and Darla can go play hockey mom. :)

I could use a toasty spot in the sun today - it supposed to get to 10F and 6 inches of snow. And back to the rink tomorrow PM for DD.
