That can be a tricky little devil. Eyeing the distances between straight stitches is a learning curve. Also, there's some ways to dress up the little squares that result, such as French knots.
Crewel work can be such a tremendous learning experience and one which I would think many embroiderers would embrace somewhere along the line of learning to stitch. Even if it's not your first love. There's so many neat stitches used, and neat effects you can get.

I grabbed the book when I saw it because I had loved crewel and "supposedly" there is a show of colonial era needlework coming to the Currier. (There is nothing on their site yet.)
The pamphlet is just a few years younger than I and looks "home made" but I like it!
