It looks like some of us locals are finally converged on a date to have an outing to Woodlawn.
Donna, Ericka, maybe Sue W (depending on her jury duty) and I will be going to the Needlework Exhibition on Tuesday, 3/20. Joiners welcome - of course.
There are directions to Woodlawn on their website,

information about the needlework show, but that's another story. You canfind info about it with some googling. Time will affect our outing to In Stitches - though it's likely we'll at least be able to stop in!
The current plan is to be there around 10 (although I'm lately always late getting to Donna's). We are planning to do lunch in the tea room, and have to leave there to be back in this area by 3:30. So we should make In Stitches, but who knows.
I have a piece in, small sampler about 5" by 10" (I think it's 9 X 14 with the frame). But no delusions about its grandeur, or awards.
Hopefully we will run into you somewhere in the house then but if not I will look for your sampler. I have two friends who did get ribbons so I will be looking for their work and I will add yours to my list as well. Beverly B
How accessible is it by metro? I'll be in DC on business for a week starting next Sunday, but won't have a car. A taxi ride from the metro satation isn't out of the question either if it's practical.
I know it's not accurate but I can't help coming up with a mental image of several ladies sitting around a grassy graveyard with all their stitching around them. :-))) Liz from Humbug
LOL - I don't remember seeing the graveyard there - but no doubt there is some family plot out back somewhere.
FWIW - We've had a postponement of the outing as my schedule just plain stinks this week, and can't get DH to babysit the builders at our house on Tuesday. Anyhow, Donna, Ericka and I (the Reston/Loudoun group) are going on the following Tuesday, the 27th. Unfortunately, Sue W. can't meet us, but that's how it goes.
The rest of you - well, it's been about as easy to find an outing date for locals, as if we had our pals from all over converging!
So - if anyone else is heading to DC - we're going to be doing the Woodlawn outing on the 27th.
Actually it would not be that far in a taxi from the Huntington Metro. I don't remember the distance but I am pretty sure it would be less than 5 miles. I also think that there is a bus stop within a block or so of Woodlawn. I used to live in that area but that was 12 years ago so I don't know the route numbers for the bus any more but busses and taxis are both avaliable from the Metro station. If you go here

you can find out which combination of bus and Metro would work best for you. I did a quickie search using Georgtown University as a starting point since I did not know exactly where you would be and it gave me 3 different alternatives. If you just use Woodlawn Plantation as the destination instead of the actual address it will ask which Woodlawn you want. The one you are looking for is the one in Fairfax County Va.I hope you will be able to make it down there.Beverly B

I've wanted to go for several years, I'd hate to miss it when I'm already down there.
The entry for Woodlawn is actually kind of just above almost in Ft Belvoir, on Rt 1. There is a bus stop along that strip, but then a hike up the drive, etc. I'd guess from the Huntington Metro is about 7.5 miles, and probably about a so miles, likely a $20 cab fare. The rates in Fairfax are $ .30 per 1/6 mile, $2.75 for first 1/6 mile, and $ .30 for 48 seconds of delay or wait.
If you have a rental car, then it's about a 30 -45 min drive from Washington circle, and an easy one at that. I'm sure there is a bus from the metro down that corridor to Woodlawn.
Woodlawn, Forestlawn, they all sound like cemetery names to me. :-)) A nice quiet grassy cemetery might be a great place to have a stitching picnic! :-)) It would have to be an old one, though, or the stitching picnics I would be involved in would have way too much laughing for mourners to appreciate. Hmmmm. A coincidence. My mom will have passed away 17 years ago on Thursday. I have frequently thought that a nice way to remember her would be to take a salami sandwich or french bread with peanut butter & have a picnic on her grave at Holy Cross. Anyway, have a great time, wherever you all go to stitch or admire the stitching of others. How could you not?? :-)) Liz from Humbug
We did this with our EGA chapter in NY. It was at a historic site that had an old cemetery. We weren't actually in the cemetery, but nearby. I think they try to do something similiar here at Frying Pan Park (where the presidentially pardoned Thanksgiving turkey used to retire to - last year he went to Disneyland) - they have a day where needleworkers and other crafters not using modern tools can sit around and demonstrate for the public.
I think this is a fine way to remember a loved one. Hope my own children do it someday.
