Bricks for fire surround

A friend wants some bricks for surrounding an outdoor fire, and he wants to be sure they'll withstand fire and ice, and anything else the universe can throw at them. He wants specific relief images on one side of each, so we're not talking about buying bricks, they need to be custom made.

Any ideas or considerations for making these withstand the elements will be greatly appreciated. What do you say? Mix in straw, grog, a bit of fireclay, what? I'll have to dry them out well and fire them slowly.

We have made some replacements last year (Jan) for our woodburner (in the pottery) out of grogged stoneware. Made them 10% bigger than the originals, fired to 1260c..... bomb proof .....

That's what I was going to suggest. Make sure it is well grogged.

Mind you it does take a family of four to move the bricks around ;-)

I was thinking of making the friends who want them come and do the lifting. :-)

Thanks!
