Converting elctric kiln to flame that will go cone 10

Hello All: I'm looking for comments on this project please. I obtained an old elect kiln, ripped out the elements, "typical olympic type w/4 bricks tall rings, top and bottom" I want to add a ring of brick between the bottom and the first ring where I will mount a burner that will blow in causing a swirling action of the heat. I am considering using an oil burner from a furnace, along with a small gas burner which should do the initial heating. I'd like to make it a down draft kiln but that is much more complicated than just cutting a hole into the top cover. Do you think that it would make much difference, updraft or down draft? Thanks, Bri snipped-for-privacy@earthlink.net

it likely makes a small difference in your kiln - up or downdraft. and for the fuss of not going with a simple updraft the extra benifits may be small.

in order to not let the radiant heat just blast out of the top of the kiln i guess you could make sure there is a kiln shelf below the flew by maybe 1 or 2 brick thicknesses. this should help keep the heat in yet not choke the flame heading for the flew.

Yeah, I think I'll go with the updraft. It will be simple and lower cost than building a chiminy for the down draft.
