A scarce, information-packed, book describing over two dozen classic decorating processes. "Pottery, the Technique of Throwing" The 388 b/w photographs allow the reader to watch over the shoulder of a skilled professional at work. Demonstrations of major throwing techniques are accompanied by clear, instructive text.

Colbeck discusses clay mixing, wedging, and kneading, as well as the pros and cons of various kinds of wheels. He covers operations involved in shaping clay on a potter's wheel. He explains the forms that can be thrown on a wheel, as well as explaining what can go wrong, when and why.

Techniques beyond throwing are covered as well: altering a thrown form, making edges, ridges, ribs and lids; using calipers for measuring; producing quantities of identical forms; throwing large pieces; creating flat forms; adding forms to previously thrown pieces; how to throw small forms "off the hump."
