Pottery Techniques of Decoration by John Colbeck
A scarce, information-packed, book describing over two dozen classic decorating processes. Each section contains demonstration photographs text and photos of selected examples -- often historical pieces. Appendices give best practice in the use of materials, a list of books for further reading, a glossary and a list of suppliers, with a comprehensive index.
Colbeck discusses clay mixing, wedging, and kneading, as well as the pros and cons of various kinds of wheels. He covers operations involved in shaping clay on a potter's wheel. He explains the forms that can be thrown on a wheel, as well as explaining what can go wrong, when and why.
Techniques beyond throwing are covered as well: altering a thrown form, making edges, ridges, ribs and lids; using calipers for measuring; producing quantities of identical forms; throwing large pieces; creating flat forms; adding forms to previously thrown pieces; how to throw small forms "off the hump."
