Firing Decals on Store-bought Ceramic Wall Tiles

I've been thinking about buying some plain white, glazed ceramic wall tiles and then applying decals on them, and firing the decals. Has anyone tried this? I think it would work since decals are only fired to somewhere around ^018 (not sure, have to look it up again).

It should work just fine. I purchased some really cool mugs last year from a discount store, and fired decals onto them for holiday gifts. Just make sure you know the temperature at which the decal matures - it is usually 018, but some fire higher and some fire lower.

Pretty straight forward to do. The only thing you have to check is that some imported tiles are very low fired, and at decal temperatures the glaze on them starts to gas, so that when they come out of the kiln the surface feels as though it is covered in sugar. This is called (unsurprisingly) *sugaring*. Test fire one of the tiles to the decal temperature before you buy a whole batch.
