Hi Sam, nice to have you back. Do you get much access to a wheel, it can be difficult to get a real feel for throwing if you can only try for a couple of hours a week. Andy

hi sam, yes, plodder is right, it can take some effort to get a real feel for the wheel, i'm building a house in the woods while i learn to throw in my electric wheel. Essentials for good throwing are: well prepared clay, not too hard not too soft, and a properly centered ball/lump of clay going round 'n round. Best potting to you sam

Hi Andy, I orded a fenton kick wheel in oct,and i'm still waiting for it.Just starting out,and cheaper than a electric I thought this was a good idea.So for now its the wheels in class, and now i've used an electric wheel i'm not sure the fenton is such a good idea? Sam.

Hi Sam Welcome to the group.... I learnt on a "Leach" kick wheel (and some power wheels)... I still use it as my favourite wheel, only using the 'lecky one when i want to throw BIG stuff (just cos centering 10 kg of clay is a little like hard work these days on a kick wheel).

The thing about a kick wheel (once you get used to it) is that it's ALWAYS going at the right speed whereas the 'lecky one almost never is (just a little too fast so you're trying to keep up with it or or too slow so the clay doesn't feel right).

Which ever one you learn on, the most important thing is CENTREING, once the clay is centred (there's no nearly here, centred is an absolute, like pregnacy, you either is, or you isn't) you can help it do anything. Hope this helps Hugs Eddie

Hi Eddie, thanks for that, you are so right Centreing is everything! I have decided to go for an electric wheel the kick wheel was not right for me. Sam.
