Joanna,

I've never heard of any of them. They're not widely available in North America. I recently built my own electric kiln. It's much better (more efficient) than a commercial one. It was fun to build, not difficult, but was quite a bit of work.

Just another option for you.

Out of the three, i've heard of Rohde, me mate Kevin got one and they are fantastic, very high build quality and seem to be reasonably cheap to run.. I live in the UK so just cos i haven't heard of the others means nowt, but Rohde are GOOD... Hugs Eddie

Mark, that is so awesome of you to share that information both here and to anyone who should stumble upon your website!!!

There are a herd of folks (well maybe just a gaggle) that are selling far less info on how to build a kiln on eBay!

You are a darling! Lori (FlameNwind)

Thanks a lot! Your kiln's instruction is marvellous!!! It looks very complicated and hard to build but maybe in future... It would be the best option for me because kilns are really expensive here in Poland. and FlameNwind has right you are incredible that you want share your knowledge for free. I saw on eBay a kiln's plan for a 90 bucks! thanks, joanna

Rohde and Kittec are German kilns and Lac is Chech. And about Rohde, has your mate a front or toploader kiln? Which of them have you recommended? Thanks for help for beginner :) joanna

Thank you.

When I started the project the dearth of information was exactly the motivation for diarizing the project on the web. People build fuel kilns ALL the time, but electric kilns are arguably simpler. It doesn't make sense to me.

I keep meaning to report back with a list of the suppliers, and a list of the things I learned / would do differently. Someday. For now, it's producing nice pots.

Glad you enjoyed it.

You're welcome.

It is honestly not very hard. The bricks cut VERY easily. The construction of the slabs (which I thought would be simple) is actually the trickiest part. But I now know that, and I would do it differently. The cutting doesn't damage the tools, but the dust could if you allow it to contaminate the motors. That's the hardest part, dust management.

I would encourage anyone to build their own.

Mark.

NB: I'm of German heritage, sorry about the game yesterday. I don't really care about soccer/football, so I feel bad for my Polish friend that I watched it with.

Cutting the bricks not afraid me, the electricity is really scary to me. My friends also have built an electric kiln but not as excellent as yours. Theirs is rectangular, frontloader and as an isolation they used.... I don't know how it is named in English, a glass fiber, a rock wool? Anyway I am seriously scared of the whole electricity staff, program selector etc. but maybe I should persuade my husband to get down to this :). Firstly I must read carefully your manual and translate it for my man:). With a pile of dictionaries I think ;).

Don't be sorry, I'm not a football fan at all. I have really low opinion about Polish players and even the worse about their coach. I only feel bad for this thousands of Polish fans which went to German, they must be really disappointed.

take care joanna

Hi Joanna,

i live near Vienna, Austria, and i have a Rhode quattro top loader. I have had it for about five or six years now, it works very well, but the metal outside is heavily rusting. Next month i have to send the lid to Germany, Rhode said they are going to repair it, but there are also rustholes on two sides. I was quite disappointed. My old american Snow kiln, which i brought with me when we moved back to Austria, was ancient but the outside was stainless steel. Kittec and Lac i have never heard of.

Nice site thanks. I just wanted to say that I am VERY jealous. Being in an old pig sty like that probably means you can hose every thing down for cleanup. Very nice set up you have.

Oh, and nice work too!

Thanks Mark,

not quite hosing it down, but easy to clean and no problem if it is dirty, it's a pigsty after all. The setup is an old farm, very typical for this area in the very east of Austria, also going into Hungary. We renovated it somewhat. My own work is fading out somewhat, i am getting too old for pottery markets, (too much work), which were my main outlets. Mostly i teach kids now and hold summer workshops for grownups, which is also fun.

Hi Monika,

I would lika to ask you how big your kiln is. I can't decide about it. It is strange that your kiln is rusting - I have a Rohde leaflet and it says that the case of kiln is stainless. Your pottery is beautifull. It is my dream - learning to throw a pots.

I just measured it, all on the inside of the firing chamber, it is square, 45 by 45cm, 53cm high.

thanks, but remember, it's mostly a matter of practice, i have been potting for a long time. If you ever come this way, don't forget to look me up, maybe we can pot together a bit.

take care, Monika
