Nylon fibers in clay?

Hi

Been reading and read about adding nylon fibers to clay that you will be making slabs out of, in order to strengthen the slabs.

But..... nylon melts, doesn't it? I don't get this at all!

It does, but it burns off in the bisque.

The nylon just strengthens the slabs until they are bisqued.

i've been messing with saw dust added to clay, and get VERY strong structure from the clay!

it burns out, and leaves a very ragged-earthy result as well.

Hi, If you have used paper/flax clay I'm sure you're aware of the fumes given off, these must surely be more toxic when using nylon! If it's possible to use nylon without too much risk of breathing in nasty fumes, it would be a great way of using up the fluff that gathers in laundry dryer filter.

Now THERE's an idea! I always wondered if that could by any chance become useful! So you mean the fibres just burn away during bisque firing - and you don't necessarily have to have a lot of nylon clothes to make it work? I have a lot of cotton and other natural fibres - probably less fumes too! HMMMM!!! Maybe you just suggested a breakthrough!

Marianne - very curious!

you might want some volume of the inert material such as nylon fibers.

my saw dust clay is composed of about 50-50 sawdust & clay. my next batch i'll do a higher volume blend of the saw dust stuff. (50-50 by compacted volume).

~ i hope you don't have that much collection coming off your clothing.
