work best to create something like a medallion (putting a small pancakeof clay on the piece and stamping this - or stamping the excess clay on thetail of a handle, etc), some work well as repeated patterns, others as asimple addition on the rim, etc. As I said they are fun ways to use up scraps of clay.

i have a stamp i made from an old LARGE chess set. the king piece made a great stamp master. i smashed a coil of clay over his nose. i use that stamp on a ball of clay & put a hole in the mouth for a simple stick incense burner.

i sometimes use the stamp with a bigger wad of clay as a simplistic foot on pieces. or as an accent point on pots. or to hide my finger print on assembled handles on mugs & pitchers.

Thanks Donna, these were great. I especially liked the rings that you can roll along for a border or something. I had a classmate once who made rolling stamps by using a hot glue gun to put a design on pvc. I used these once and they worked great!

That is a great idea! I wonder if you could find rubber designs that you could glue onto the PVC as well? When I see rubber stamps they are giving away I buy them and stamp into clay pancakes then create ceramic stamps out of the negative. If you could pull off or cut off cleanly the rubber from the wood it might be usable. Something new to try... I love playing!

find ear rings, toys (truck tires) cooking tools, even plastic formed for cake packaging at the grocery store are candidates for stamp masters.

Ok, I have to bite - "cake packaging" is used how? Donna

P.S. this query comes from N.Y. - U.S.A were cake packaging may not be the same as what you have.

Over here (UK) we call them *Roulettes*. I make a hole in the centre of the ring, sleeve it with thin polythene tube, and make U shaped loop handles of heavy gauge wire, the ends of the wire fit into the holes in the Roulette so you can roll them along easily.

I have a celtic knot on a ring i wear, that i pull off and stamp into clay quite frequently

"cake packaging" are those flimsy thin plastic forms they make & use to wrap & sell cakes at the grocery store. thin plasitc trays for whatever they sell like the dellicatession trays, pastries, etc. if you're bent to look at texture on clay you start to see neat patterns in these items. i use some as press forms for bowls, etc.

i designed & made a bunch of the Roulettes (see link). i had access for a few years to laser powered "star trek" replicator machines - so i made all of these which otherwise are near impossible to make. i use the roulettes to texture pots, and i also used several designs as normal stamps.

steve: had you dropped by on your NCECA trip a few years back you would have gotten one of these to take home! i sent one to monica with her christmas mug a few years back, and just recently passed a few to Miss New Zealand a few weeks ago when SHE came by on a visit.....

Of course.

We are going to a wedding in NZ next spring, and I hope to make the return trip via your neck of the woods. With you I now have one relative and three friends in the LA area, so I hope very much to make it much more than an overnight stop-off.

Truly a case of See ya in 06
