raku firing

Hi All, I'm getting a portalble raku kiln next week. I've been looking around my yard for a suitable place for it and I was wondering how close to the house can I put it. I'm hoping for a space about 20 feet from the house. Is that ok? I'll have access to the water hose and the ground is fairly level. I live in a wooded area. How about trees? How far from trees? Thank's for any information, Sandi

20 feet from the house is more than OK; I used to fire mine in the back yard which was less than 10 ft. square. Keep a clear space above the kiln of at least 6 ft. You will find that the heat from the flue actually dissipates within 2 feet of the outlet, so that will allow you to keep an eye on colour changes within. Cover the hose from the Burner with pieces of Angle Iron (I painted mine Red) to protect it from being trodden on or tripped over. Keep the gas bottle(s) Downwind of the kiln so that in the (unlikely) event of a leak, the gas will travel away from the kiln.

god words from steve mills. the city code around my area wants nothing within 15 foot from a chimney, but they also don't fully understand pottery kilns either. monitor your firings & make note of the flame heights going on. keep that waterhose handy. hopefully you only use it to wash off pots.
