sawdust clay

i mixed up some clay two weeks back - 50-50 of clay & saw dust chips. all cone 10 clays, a variety from porcelain to toothy sculpture clay body.

i kept adding saw dust to the pug mill until the clay looked like wet cow pies. ~ then i stopped.

i threw several pieces last weekend and while it threw real weird, i completed several 10 to 15 pound size pieces. then i hand built several more. they sure dry slowly. yet they also feel unusually light already.

i will just high fire the pieces, no glaze. i also expect a really rough spacy texture to result once the saw dust (pet bedding material) burns out.

since my kiln is nearly full for a glaze fire i hope to be seeing finished pieces in about a month.

stay tuned!

I threw some with fine sawdust in once. It made it easier to throw, added tooth, but the finish ended up a bit pitted and pocked. No glaze is probably a better idea. Annemarie

i'm skipping a glaze, i'll go cone 10 naked fire.

i heard from another potter who did sculture on porcelain that she got fastenating green tints from her mix of porcelain & saw dust.

i really want strong pitting & pockets. maybe i'll see how big a chunk of wood i can get away with...

Green, hmmm... sure hope that wasn't copper from CCA treated lumber in the sawdust! (I don't know what color I'd expect from the arsenic, and don't expect I'll ever find out first-hand...) ;-)

actually somewhere long ago i saw a recipe for celedon & it was an ash based glaze. so saw dust turning to ash & then glaze would be possible.

now coffee grounds - THAT would be smelly!

I did a slap piece where I rolled some old lentils, mustard seed and other whole spices on top with the last roll. I really love that piece. I did glaze it with something like Randy's Red but I don't use it for wet food (just chips). It developed quite a mold when it was drying out but that did not seem to be a problem in any way. Donna

Hi,

Sounds interesting. I'm from the UK; can some-one explain "tooth"?

Take a walk before emailing me.

"tooth" would be like heavy grog content. some surface roughness. grit. clay body strength increase.
