Tool question for newbie ....

Hi I am new to this group and pottery I am wondering if there is any tool available to form clay in the shape of ceramic tiles seen on roofs. this is for buidling a small clay house.

i think the old timers used to slap out their slab of clay & put it over their thigh - hense the slight taper shape.

so for a small scale house, use a tapered rod?

The ones I have seen used by professionals are simple wood half circle tubes. so a dowl of the size you want (larger than the final size of course) would work just fine. The shape is such that if you put some newspaper or saran wrap on the dowl the clay will shrink and lift up without cracking.

Why dont you make one as a master and make a plaster sprig from it? That way you can make as many as you like and they will all be the same. JM
