A beautiful quilt that matches nothing

Usually, I try to make quilts that either somewhat match the decor of the intended recipient or are composed of the recipient's favorite colors. However, I've got a black, red, and white top from one of Terbear's swap,\ that is just stunning (everyone did a wonderful job), and yet, I can't seem to move forward on the quilting because it doesn't fit either of my criteria. I think I'm being too rigid in my ideas. I need a new philosophy. Anyone else run into this?

Michelle, I've grown very selfish in my old age (really, that's my excuse now--it's always really been about me:)) ANYHOW, usually I make quilts for the sheer enjoyment of it, not much worrying if they match either my or anyone else's decor. I enjoy the process much more than the product, and love seeing the result, after it went in a completely new direction than I originally 'planned'. Usually, about half way through a project, i'm thinking of what I really want to do next. IOW, in many cases if the top's done, it's a quilt!

I'm in the process of quilting my top from that swap right now! I think of my block swap quilts as practice pieces for my quilting. On this particular quilt top, I'm incorporating feathers into each block. And right now, I don't plan on giving it to anyone - I will keep it for us to use as a cover-up on a chilly Saturday afternoon. Would it help you to think of your top as a showcase for your quilting and something you will keep and treasure instead of something that was created with a particular person in mind?

hmmmmm.... what a delightful dilemma! I planned this house for that eventuality. My bedroom has cream walls and I painted my vintage furniture black. The floors are hardwood. As long as I do something for the windows that will match the quilt, I can use any colors in there.

So, you could send it to me- I'll make some red curtains! When the lights shine thru the red curtains at night the neighbors can think I'm a naughty girl! ;-) At my age that might be a compliment! LOL

LOL! I *really* like the way you think. :-) I'm beginning to feel a bit better already. I could grow into this way of looking at it.

Hi Sandy,

You've expanded on Rusty's idea and added some practical applications. I don't dress to match the furniture either. HA! Why should my quilts have to match anything? I had a hunch my thinking on the subject was dim-witted, but your examples illuminated how much so.

Hi Louise,

Well yes. It is work of art, is it not? :-)

You will put up a picture when yours is done, won't you? I can't wait to see those blocks full of feathers.

LOL! Very good beg! Leslie, you're too late. Rusty, Sandy, and Louise already straightened me out on my thinking. Nope, this work of art doesn't have to match a darn thing.

However, if you do want to make red curtains and curl the neighbors toes, I can tell you the mix of black, white, and red in a quilt is uniquely stunning. Being such a talented lady, I know you would enjoy making one of your own. :-) Your house sounds well-suited to these colors--along with most colors. Terrific planning! Me? I just had to have a deep mauve accent wall in my bedroom, which I love. I've found as long as I put a smidge of purple in quilts, most colors go. However, the red in this quilt clashes. You know what? I don't care! LOL!

I find that whenever I buy something big that I really love, the room arranges itself around it. I am sure it will be the same with the quilts I make for myself. Change is good :-)

But quilting for others will take into account their tastes and decor.

Sometimes my lap blankets and full-size blankets only come out when needed. In these cases, matching doesn't matter one bit. A non-matching quilt can be the center of attention when you're snuggling in it on the couch or armchair.

I have a harder time working on a quilt when the colors aren't ones that I favor, and then I find myself dragging my feet more. Or I am more content to let it just sit for long periods of time.

What you have is the quilting equivalent of a special jewel -- beautiful and strong enough to stand alone. If somebody handed you a

6 carat emerald you certainly wouldn't be upset that you didn't have a whole variety of green and cream stones to "go with it".

Paint the bedroom white and give it a woodblock floor. ANYTHING goes with that! :)

Michelle, do you have a recipient for this quilt?

In many cases a make a quilt without any particular destination. When an occasion for a quilt occurs, then I have something on hand.

Meanwhile, remember that "great art doesn't match your sofa"!

Yes. But I go ahead and quilt it anyway, figuring that I'll either find someone who loves it or find a way to use it myself. As a result, my living room frequently doesn't really look "blue", though that's what I'd had in mind ....

All very good points, Edna. I think the crux of the matter is loving the black, red, and white quilt, and I really do. :-)

Hi Trixie,

Yes, I've learned not to make quilts with colors that I don't care for. After one sat in my closet unfinished for years, I finally sold it on ebay. It was a beautiful quilt, but the colors just didn't sing to me.

That said, it doesn't apply to the black, red, and white quilt. I do love the colors. Was just flummoxed by it's failure to match anything. Fortunately, as usual, the RTCQers are straightening me out. :-)

Auuugh, but that would be the reasonable thing to do. That said, I simply can't part with my deep mauve accent wall. No ma'am, ain't gonna do it. ;-)

Hi Nann,

No, this quilt does not have an intended recipient. Good idea about keeping it on hand, in case someone else should need a quilt.

And you've got an excellent point about art! :-)
