A lil bit OT Speaking of Christmas gifts...

I just started making coiled fabric bowls and am LOVING it! They are quick to make up *on the sewing machine* (YAY!) and look great with any fabrics including seasonal fabrics. My first one was large and oval with handles- I really challenged myself for my first attempt. It took about 4 hrs. with a $3 bundle of 100 ft. of cotton clothesline from WalMart and approx. a yard of fabric. The second one is round and fairly large, too, and will take a total of about 2.5 to 3 hrs. to finish. My ex 'fixed' my computer so well that now my camera won't talk to it, so I am waiting for him to un-fix it... hence no pics of what I've done so far. Here are some links and directions-

My parents are at an age where they 'don't need or want anything'. I am making one with handles to surround a 10 in. casserole dish- they love to go to both their retirement community's and their church's potluck dinners. It will be a practical and unique gift for them to carry a hot casserole or other food item. I'll include a Pyrex covered casserole dish inside the fabric basket for their Christmas gift. Prolly I'll fill the casserole dish with my homemade caramels, too. The folks do love those!

You're welcome!

I just re-read her directions. I prefer to use a spring loaded clothespin over a binder clamp but either would work. Here's a link to some decorated bowls. Even prettier!

I've probably made 20 of these bowls, at least a dozen for a holiday bazaar last year, and they are very addicting! I haven't been able to find cotton closeline anywhere other than the Ace Hardware store locally, and it is much more expensive then what you paid at Walmart.

I just paid $13 for 200 ft. at my local Ace Hardware. I'm stocking up at WalMart on my next trip to town. They are a blast to make! I just finished my second. I made little loops at the top edge every three inches. They look so cute! On to the third bowl.....

I've got the book and the clothesline and the fabric. Darn thing just won't make itself. I want some flat counter mats. I like a placemat in front of the toaster and beside the stove and all over to catch crumbs and drippings.

Just need to get a move on.

I love that even crappy "what was I thinking" fabric looks terrific.

Cindy, you are so right. I've had the most pleasant outcome from the most horrible "what was I thinking" fabric.

I bought some at WalMart today- it was $2.97 for 100 ft. That's enough for one really large bowl or a couple/three medium sized bowls. You can also make flat coils for a coaster for drinking glasses and a small-ish bowl to hold the coasters.

One thing I discovered at our WalMart Super Center- where the ironing boards and laundry items are located they have plastic clothesline rope. But over by the paint and hardware they have the cotton clothesline. Be sure to search around in any store. Our True Value had the same set-up... plastic by the house ware section and the cotton over by the tools. But it cost $13 for 200 ft.

Leslie: Thank you for the two web sites. Today I happened to start my first coiled basket/bowl. I came on line to talk about it, and your message was already here. I am using a purple, mauve, cream, and green print. I am still in the wrapping phase. So far, so good; lots of fun. I am sure the web sites will be very useful as I progress. Pat in Virginia

I wrap as I go using a spring type clothespin to hold the wraps on the clothesline while doing the sewing- alternating with wrapping then stitching. Are you wrapping it all then stitching? I think that would be much more difficult. Also, I found it is *much* easier with a narrower strip of fabric. I did my first one with about 1.25 in. (thinking it would go faster- not) and then the next few with .75 in. The subsequent bowls went so much easier after the first one with the wider strips.

Your colors sound lovely. Have fun!

I checked at our WalMart both in hardware/paint and in the laundry section and they didn't have any cotton clothesline rope. Rats! Our store isn't a super center so maybe that is why they don't carry it.

Will polyester rope work? Hope so, that's all I could find.

Leslie: Well, I don't come here too often anymore, so I appreciate your patience in 'waiting' for my reply. ;) I am doing all the wrapping, then will stitch. I chose this sequence because the wrapping is a nice occupation at quilting bees and such. I'm using .75" strips, on advice of friends. They used 1" as that was what was in the kits they bought. They switched to .75" and I could see it was a better choice. I let my quilting buddies work out the kinks on this new-to-us craft! One thing I would advise for take along work is to take a few hand wipes in the kit, as the glue gets a bit messy. There is a book out on the topic and some of the projects are really cool! I'm going to stick with the web sites ... the price is right!
