A little of this and that....

Hi all, Just taking a break from sewing a simple four patch backing for a friend's quilt and decided to say hello and ask some questions as well. With my shoulder pain I don't post much but I do read everyday. Has anyone heard anything new about or from Jeanne yet? I remember after my Uncle's funeral, I was laying my head on my Gramma's lap and she was talking about how hard it was for her to wrap her brain around the idea of outliving her children (this was the second child to die before her, my father being the first one). It's so hard not to be able to do more to ease a loved one's pain. I have entered the world of facebook and it's been a family blessing for me. My brothers and I became estranged some years ago when my mom was in the nursing home for a time. That has begun to heal but we (my mom and I) were kept from my two young nieces. The oldest one has since graduated from H.S. and is a college student now. Well, we have found each other again via facebook and are communicating almost daily. Not only that but she's been a personal care attendant for three years and I'm in the process of being assessed for perhaps having a PCA and if she doesn't get the job she wants this summer, she wants to be my PCA for the summer! I missed out on so much of her young life but now I'm getting to know her as a young woman and I am so grateful! (She's in the process of sandbagging up in the Red River Valley preparing for the major flooding that is almost upon them. All her classes were cancelled so they could help.) I was skeptical about facebook but now I'm a convert. If you want to find me I'm listed under Jeri Jo Redman. I'm considering starting a blog (as my shoulders permit) but don't know where to go to start one. Does anyone have a suggestion of how to start...what sites are good? I hope everyone enjoys all the quilt shows this spring, they sound like fun. My greetings to the baseball swap gang!!!! Let the bragging begin!!!! My blessings and hugs to all who are hurting and/or healing. For me it's been a rough winter but spring is here and with it new hope, new beginnings. I'm blessed to have you all in my life.

My niece is also helping with the sandbagging in the area. She is a freshman in college. Having lived along the Red River for 22 years, I have done my share of filling sandbags the old fashioned way...with one person shoveling and another holding the bag. Needless to say, I am very aware of what everyone is going through. I almost lost my brother during the big flood in 1997. He was patrolling the earthen walls and was pulled under the bridge. And now his daughter is out filling the sandbags and trying to prevent another catastrophe. And like you, I only know this through her facebook pages.

It sounds like it's really going to be tough again. I'm glad your brother survived....is he okay? Are you still living in the RRV?

Yes it sounds like things will be tough. But in times like this, the people come out of the woodwork so to speak to help as much as possible. Lots of people traveling by buses over 70 miles to help out. Seems more people are helping this time around as they remember vividly what happened 12 years ago. Here is hoping the early predictions were high and it won't be as bad as they expected. But better prepared than waiting to see what will happen.

Please send up prayers and positive thoughts for "Our Marine" and his wife. They will be evacuating their new home tomorrow morning. I am hoping they can still find a way across the river and come here to stay with me.

Please continue to stay in touch with this group. I have trouble finding time to read this group on a daily basis and just don't do the Face book or other communication sites. I am tempted to check my son's Facebook page!

Dreamweaver, I've just recently discovered facebook myself.....okay, so my sister pointed it out and then my step-mom is also on there! Then I recently talked with my middle son (who lives in MA with his dad) and he's on there! Now, how cool is that!!! Anyhow, since I've been on I've also been connected with relatives (on my dad's side.)

Okay, I have been busy....very busy! First my grandma was in the hospital for an obstructive bowel and they didn't think she'd make it...she did and now she's miserable in the nursing home. Then as she was being taken back to the nursing home I get a phone call from my dad...he doesn't think he has much time left and wants us home. (He has terminal lung cancer and we are just waiting for his passing.) The good news is that not only did I make it home (Minnesota), but my two sisters also flew in from different parts of the country and we were able to spend time together with my dad while he was still coherent. In both cases, I wish God would just hurry up and take them. During this whole process I was able to reconnect and resolve issues with my mom and one of my sisters.

Since I've returned home to Oregon I have been busy this week getting ready for my late DH's Spirit of Life party....it's on the 28th in the afternoon. I'm not really comfortable with throwing such a big bash, my anxiety level is through the roof...I just keep focusing on the fact that the people coming are family and friends.

I haven't done any sewing/quilting lately, but plan on working on my mariner's compass table topper for my in-laws....there how's that for being on topic! lol

Good seeing you again. How IS "Our Marine" doing? Has a wife now? FANTASTIC!!!! Does that mean he's 'well' or close to it? I think of both of you often and wonder how you are getting along.
