Another Applique Question

Okay, I'm going to do a little applique project to practice my applique. I'm going to do some hearts on some 6" squares, one heart per square. Do the 6" squares risk fraying while I'm handling them? If so, how should I approach it?

Thanks, Cynthia

Until you know how much you are going to frazzle, you may want to start with squares of about 8". You could baste a hem on the edges. I've seen some needle folks make a masking tape sort of hem on their needlework but it is not a good solution to my way of thinking. It makes a very stiff edge to annoy you. If you have pinking shears or a pinking rotary blade, that would be nice. Sometimes a thread from a raw edge of the background fabric will come loose and wander over to join in on the back of the appliqué in progress; not life-threatening but a nuisance. Polly

They won't fray much, provided they are appliqué-quality cotton! But the easiest method is to cut the squares a bit larger all around and trim to the final size after the appliqué is done. Good idea anyway, because the hand sewing sometimes shrinks the background a bit. Roberta in D

When I am appliquéing on a square of fabric I usually cut the background a bit large, then trim after finished appliquéing. That way I can correct if things get off center or there is fraying or the fabric pulls up some. JMHO, Pati, in Phx
