Another Quilted Silk Jacket

Hi Guys, Well, I need to get myself geared up so I can start the prep work for the kimono silks to be used in the quilted jacket I will make DD for Christmas. I am going to be at my cabin for about 6 weeks starting the end of July and want to work on it then. I have to baste the ends of all the different fabrics (that's about 2 dozen!) before I can launder them. Then pressing and deciding which fabric will go where on the jacket. Most of the fabrics have some sort of butterfly design on them as DD loves b'flies (HMMMM -- guess where any leftover butterflies will go?!?!?). I will get all the pieces (18 or 20) cut out and then ship them to myself at DD's. I'll do the quilting once I am at the cabin and then hopefully have time to get the basic jacket put together. Not sure if I will get it finished. Working on silk is tedious and very time consuming so I take a lot of breaks. It would be nice not to have to send the jacket back and forth across the country! If I get it finished, I can carefully pack it in a box and leave it at DD's. Anyway, posting about it means I have to get started -- LOLOL! Once I tell everyone I am starting, I can't back out :-). I'm also going to work on the winter cat quilt for myself! I've been collecting fabrics for it for about 8 years so it's time to get started!! CiaoMeow >^;;^<

I made one for myself last summer -- photos are in my Webshots album. There's no batting in the jacket so it's hard to see the quilting. I backed each piece with dupioni silk and then quilted that. Then once the pieces were assembled, I lined the whole thing with silk. Three layers of silk are enough for me -- no batting required ;-). CiaoMeow >^;;^<

why did you expect anything else

LOL ... I had friends recommending Chico's all the time, so I finally stopped in there one day. You are so right! Black or BDU (battle dress uniform) colors. : P All of those make me look dead. I like bright jewel colors and except for red (AHA! blood!), they just didn't have it ... I haven't been back since.

I fancy bright colors in everything also.

I really learned to hate Chico's when I had this supervisor who insisted on dressing a lunatic. One day she came into work wearing bumblebee barettes, and yellow honeycomb knitted vest over a black top, a black and yellow skirt, and wedge sandals with bumblebees on them. I don't know whether she bought the outfit or any part of it at Chico's. That's not color. That's something else: she was an executive and somehow she reminded more of a second grader than a boss on that day. Maybe she was just trying to prentend she was a busy bee.

Thus I worked hard to avoid anything she endorsed.

In the meantime, neat find: Although it is not on display, the American Museum of Art in DC has a 48 state quilt in archive at the Smithsonian. Maybe one day they will lay it out for folks to see.

Oh my gosh - I have to respectfully disagree with some of your conclusions about Chico's - my most favorite clothing store on the planet! I love bright colors & Chico's has plenty of bright colors. I doubt that you would ever see any "bumble-bee" themed items at Chico's. I think their clothes are stylish, without being over the top. They are current, without being trendy. I suppose their selection could be different in California than it is in the rest of the country. Sometimes their tops are a little too Miami-ish (too colorful & too much gold) for my tastes, but I try to remember that they don't just design their clothes for my taste:) They also carry tall length in pants (on-line only), & that is a great thing for me at almost 6' tall. I have to tell you that I get more compliments on my Chico's clothes than anything else I wear. Give them another try - it's worth it. And they have awesome sales! There is one going on right now. And if you live anywhere near a Chico's outlet - you practically feel like you are stealing the clothes.

I think the largest size they carry might be a 3.5, which I think is a size

  1. I can't remember if they carry petites or not. I know that Coldwater Creek carries plus sizes (& petites). I usually manage to find things at Coldwater Creek as well.

They do sizes larger than an 18 -- I wear a 22 and I know they have stuff to fit me. The problem I have with their clothes is that all the stuff big enough to fit me is made of the stretchy, drape-y, spandex or lycra stuff. It absolutely CLINGS to every bump, bulge, nook and cranny of my fat Irish arse & thighs! Large size for so many people today means being fat and middle aged -- NOT necessarily young and firmly fat

-- LOLOL! The thought of that clingy lycra stuff caressing my cellulite thighs is just way too obscene so I don't even get near that sort of clothing! CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Oh Tia Mary.....I can so identify with everything you wrote! I HATE clingy clothes. I feel like I'm being strangled. No one wants to see all my lumps and bumps and bulges. And I don't care to see it on others either. I haven't been in a Chico's for quilte a while. I didn't know they carried larger sizes. But just because the size is larger, it doesn't mean the style is good for "largers"!

Kathy - I think Tia may be speaking about Coldwater Creek with the larger sizes.

Ok....That's more in line with what I've seen. I must have mis-read it.

The women's group I belong to had a fashion show last year with clothing from Chico's. We were told that their largest size would fit a regular size 20-22. I like the style of clothing they offer but not the fabrics. Ergo, I have never tried on anything so can't actually say for sure if it would fit MOI. As for colors, they did offer several really pretty, bright, splashy prints. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

I've never bought anything at Chico's, but I have looked and I walk past their window displays frequently. I rather like the looks of many of their clothes (and I'm generally an Eddie Bauer/Lands End type of person). When I have gone inside for a closer look, I generally have not found anything I really like at a price I am willing to pay. I wonder if it depends somewhat on the individual store manager as well as the location of the store.

Yes, sometimes they can be a little pricey - but watch for the sales (going on right now). Up to 65% off many items. I'm headed over there this afternoon.

well that sounds profitable.

There's one in the next burb over so I think I might visit next time I am around one.

As far as Coldwater Creek, I have always loved their styles. I stare lovingly at the catalogues my mother gets. She drags me there every year for my birthday. I try stuff on but none of it fits. But it fits beautifully on the 78 year old mother of mine. So she says, I really like this but I won't pay the money. And I end up buying it for her. On my birthday. So far, I have only found one dress that fit right. A velvet leopard dress that I wear in winter time. It was a great purchase. I just wish they made more in that cut.

You know, sometimes, you don't think about something, like bumblebee bosses, for years

And then suddenly, something you hear once on a weekend, suddenly becomes a hot topic in your life. I had an interview this morning and a friend next office over has the same panel tomorrow. So she asked me what to do to prepare. I told her and then said, dress professionally even though the panel won't be really dressed up. More business casual, but still dress up.

I mentioned one of the women on the panel and she laughed saying, o man, she wears nothing but Chico's. And then she said, I am wearing Chico's right now. It's all clingy. And then she started picking at spots to show me what she meant. I know I visibly grinned. She didn't know why though.
