Hi from Downunder in Australia.
It is a bit hard to tell how much fabric you need without some idea of what you are making. Do you have a picture, finished dimensions of the quilt, web link - anything.
12yards "probably" sounds about right but much will vary with your design and layout.Assuming that you mean 16" finished blocks you will need to cut blocks for hand applique bigger and trim after all that handling, so allow about 18" squares. So you will get 4 per yard, and for 25 you will need you will need 6 1/2 yards. That is just for the blocks.
You don't say how wide your borders are so I will just assume that they are 8" finished, and that you can get four strips across the width of the fabric. For Borders you will need the length of your quilt so you can cut all borders across one width of fabric - in this case about another 3yards if you have sashing between your blocks -
because - most baltimore layouts have sashing between the blocks, and you haven't mentioned how wide they are. Sashes will add to the fabric you need for your borders by making your quilt longer and wider. Sashes (with contrast squares, so not cut in one long piece) 2" wide will take just under 2 yards.
More details needed to be specific, but the last quilt I made that was that big I just bought a 20yard bolt of background fabric and threw what was left over into the stash for another project LOL.

Sorry Ruth, I am no good at math. I did want to let you know you are not the only embroiderer to start working on quilts. I do needlepoint, cross stitch, and some surface embroidery. I decided to try my hand at quilting and quickly found that I like applique a lot more than piecing blocks. I do both machine and hand applique and plan on trying all the different applique techniques sooner or later.
There is a Block of the Month for this news group that you might want to join. We started in April so you won't be far behind, and we only make blocks for ourselves so you don't have to send anything to anyone. So far the blocks have all been easy ones, but they should get harder in future months. You can use your creativity and embroidery skills to add more detail to the easy blocks if you wish too. Oh, and Teri has an online gallery where you can see some of our finished blocks at

I'm coming up with only 6 yards.
You'll get two 16" squares per width of fabric. So you'll need 16" x 13 or a
208" length of fabric. 208" / 36" (per yard) is 5.778, or round up to 6 yards. If you want to be able to mess up, get an extra half yard. :)- Vote on answer

I agree with you Kathy.
Except....
If she already has enough fabric for 9 blocks than she would only need
16" x 8 = 128" divided by 36" = 3.5 additional yardsBut, I would probably cut my blocks 18" and then trim them up to 16" once I got done.... 18" x 8 = 144" divided by 36" = 4 additional yards

Guess I didn't read carefully enough -- I thought she needed 25 additional blocks. :)
Still, neither one of us came up with 12 yards...

Hello I got 12 yards in total, but am not sure.... My reasoning was -cutting 16 inch squares, I only get 2 across - about 6 yards I thought the borders would have to be the same depth as the squares, i.e. cut 16 inches wide, so I thought I would need to allow another 6 yards. But I see now if I make the borders narrower I could use the 13" left from the blocks and use less fabric. Will have to work out the finished size I want, and see. I just want to make sure I have enough fabric. I hadn't thought of doing a thin band around the 25 blocks, before the border, but that would look good in maybe green. I am enjoying the pieces so far, have done bias bar stems, leaves by needleturn and ruched rose, and am about to start folded rose petals. it takes forever by hand, but I think the effect is well worth it.
Thank you so much for all your input Ruth
