Bargain Fabric & Thread

Here's a new topic! I'd like to hear about your fabric and thread bargains ... let's limit this to the current year, 2006.

Last month I lucked out at a DAV Thrift Store. I purchased a lovely one yard piece of fabric (David Textiles) for only $.25! It is medium bronze with dark geometric design. At same time, for another $.25, I bought yardage in two sections, one about 2 yards, the other an odd shape I guestimate at 1 yard; this fabric has lots of small foliage (herbs?) on cream. It will work for purse lining or quilt backing. So, I got

4 yards total for half a dollar! Average price per yard: $.125, USA.

Can you beat that? Grins, PAT in VA/USA PS: Roberta, the store is on Rt. 60, in Denbigh.

Bargains are relative. The best bargain IMO is the friendliness of this group, which can't be bought for money. Results in squishies, i.e. free fabric plus a delightful thrill plus a warm feeling around the heart. Roberta in D

I was thinking *new* fabrics ;-)

but then most of my new fabrics are shopped for at the wholesalers - heaven on earth!

This won't be a bargain, in the strict sense of the word; and it hasn't happened yet. BUT, I have been told that a chap who sells, amongst other things, plain Liberty Tana lawn will have a stand at our largest quilt show, in August. The element of 'bargain' will be the fact of being able to buy it at all >gg< One of those things which are a bargain at any price - you know?! . In message , Pat in Virginia writes

I can't beat that, but I was happy to be able to buy a bunch of brown solids from

in Sasha's colours. They were only $4 a yard, so I bought about 8 half-yards. The leftovers will make nice dolls as well.

I bought yards and yards of Hoffman florals from a quilt store that was going out of business. They were $3.00 a yard. I think I ended up with about 25 yards.

Some lovely poly suede fabric for £3.50m Some excellent stuff for £1 per metre that turned out to be FAAAAR too good to make toiles out of! Ikea cotton thread: 99p for a 300m reel. Red, white, and pale café au lait. Lots of reels of different sorts of thread for 45p a reel, the best of which is old fashioned Sylco on 1000m cops! :)

A tripod for the camera from Aldi for 10! DH bought it today. It will improve my photography for the web site, so is most definitely a sewing accessory! :)

B..B..But, Jessamy, if you don't already own some of the same fabric, it is "new". New to you, that is! :-)

All my bestest bargain fabric purchases have been at yard sales and thrift stores. Debra in VA See my quilts at

ah yes well.. here it is rare to the extreme to find fabric yardage at a thrift shops yard sales are just as rare as people usually take their stuff to a junk market as they are called - a place one can rent a stall and sell off all your junk - different countries, different ways, we don't have Joanne's and we don't have target or any of the other cheap sources.

there are clothing fabric ships here but they are also getting few and far between and some are even closing down :-(

but to make up for it I usually use up fabric to the last scrap :-) and love every moment I get!

Your junk market is called a flea market here. I've found some nifty stuff at them sometimes. You have to go early to get the good stuff though. Debra in VA See my quilts at
