Batting and Batt-Mart

Does anyone here buy batting by the roll, and if so where? I have previously bought rolls of 48" wide batting to use in quillows from JoAnne. The batting I bought from JoAnn's website before was low loft 3 oz. batting. Reading their site recently I saw that people were complaining about the deterioration in quality. So I decided to look elsewhere.

I seemed to remember people here talking about Batt-Mart, so I ordered a roll of 3 oz. low-loft (.25 inch) batting from them, which they claimed had the most evenly distributed fibers ever. I got the batting today, and if by evenly distributed they mean paper thin, see through, and actual holes, then I guess their write-up was accurate. But nowhere is this batting a quarter-inch thick! They responded to my complaint by saying, pretty much, what do you expect from 3 oz. batting, it is "very thin and see-through." I should have ordered 4 oz. or 6 oz., according to them, in order to not have holes. Now, if their write-up had SAID that it would be thin and see-through, and full of holes I guess I would have only myself to blame. Live and learn, no more Batt-Mart.

So, any recommendations for rolls of batting 48" by (whatever) yards?

Iris,

Maybe you need to buy whatever brand you like by the yard. I've used a Joanns coupon and gotten 10-15 yards of Warm'n'Natural (which I like to use).

So look around for a brand/quality you already like and know. Then ordering that even online from whatever store should be safe. Although maybe it'll cost a bit more. But it won't be as expensive as having unusable stuff that you paid for!

I am just SO sorry to hear that, Iris. I buy mountains of batting from Batt-Mart and have always been very pleased. Wonder what's going on there? However, it does seem like one time I ordered a bargain batting from them and it was no bargain. I think I sent that stuff on to Jill. The batting I like is Gold by Mountain Mist - but it is a 50/50 blend; it is good for crib quilts but I know that is not the batting of choice for most quilters. Polly

Well, I've unrolled quite a bit of the stuff and I can use it if I double it. Not ideal, but will work, I think. I've been looking on-line and found a couple of places I will check out next time. One of them, Create for Less, I've dealt with before for other crafting items, with good luck, so that might be an answer.

Iris, I'm so sorry this happened. But in an effort to make lemonade, could you use this batting with two layers of it inside your quilts? Try to stagger the holes so they aren't one on top of the other. VBEG

I stick to Warm & Natural/White for about 99% of my quilts. I like how it sticks to the sandwich and how it handles while quilting and I can wash and dry it on hot temps to preshrink it. It's boring and safe.... but then so am I!

Sometimes..... :-)

Howdy!

I'll stick w/ Batt-Mart and the Hobbs Heirloom I get from there.

Batt-Mart is publishing the batting MAKER's blurb; they don't test-drive all the batting themselves (not enough hours in a lifetime). They can't determine what the buyer is looking for; we have to do that.

And sometimes the batting changes; I remember using Mt.Mist years ago; wouldn't touch it now, it has thin spots & lumps, and no way to tell that in the bag.

Have you bought this batting before? Tried this brand before ordering it from B-Mart? I've had samples of all kinds of batting, some that come in little collections, some that are 10" squares. I've bought pkgs of batts to try out, decide what to order in bulk. That's how I knew to get the HH. I know Hobbs stands behind their products.

For the batt you don't like, perhaps the ones to contact would be the batting maker? Wanna' tell us who that was?

Good luck!

I just bought 10 yards of Warm and Natural from JoAnn's on sale for $5.99 a yard. I actually prefer the White and Natural, but they didn't have any. At least they said they didn't, but they didn't go look. This JoAnn's is a huge store, and is now being downsized by 20% in size. It was a mess! No one seemed to know where anything was. But, the qulting cottons were right inside the front door!

Also, I wonder If I'm slow to notice, but the Warm & Natural which shows a cotton plant on the wrapper and says that it's "needled cotton", actually is

87.5% cotton and 12.5% polypropylene!!! The label reads "Natural cotton batting". It then goes on to show the actual contents.

This batting (48" wide roll) is primarily for the quillows that I pretty much mass produce - sold a few and give them away. I've probably made in excess of 150 so far - lost count long ago. For bed quilts and more "special" stuff I do use other batting, at least Fairfield, if not Quilter's Dream.

Anyway, I pretty much decided when I saw it that the double layer idea was the way to go, so I will do that, and it should be okay. As I rolled off a few yards, it seems a little better further on, not too many holes, although still pretty uneven.

Just a learning experience!

(LY Quilter's Choice in Sauget, IL made the batting, according to a label on the wrapper. Never heard of 'em.)

Bought it before!? Tried it!? Nah - whaddya think I am, smart? LOL

What I am is a very cautious person, usually, but every once in a while I just cut loose and do something impulsive and not too bright - like buy batting because they said "This batting is the most consistent batting we have ever seen produced. The fibers are very evenly distributed throughout the batting."

But - whatever, as Leslie said in her post, I'm just gonna use two layers and life will go on. Any really big, important projects don't get this batting anyway, they get better stuff. At the rate I go, I'll probably use it up pretty fast, especially double and then I'll just buy something else, somewhere. Maybe even Hobbs! Who knows?

I guess what I'm trying to say is, I'm over it!

If I'm doing a quilt for someone else, and hand quilting, I like Mountain Mist, low loft. It seems to do the job and is not expensive.

For my own quilts or baby quilts, I like WnN or WnW. I have used the Black W/N as well for Amish style quilts and that works very well.

thanks for the heads up on the Batt Mart. I'll have to try that place next time I order online.
