Best place to sell a quilt

Hi all,

I have a quilt that I wish to sell on behalf of the current owner who commissioned it and would like advice on the best way to go about it.

The quilt is the Thimbleberries Pansy Park design by Lynette Jensen in a medallion style reminiscent of an 18th century coverlet. The quilt measures 92" x 112" (234cm x 284cm) and features 17 different Thimbleberries fabrics designed specifically for Pansy Park, including a designer topiary style tree motif, pansy chain border print and co- ordinating 108" (274cm) wide backing with a cream on cream pansy print.

The quilt was made as a shop sample by a multi-award winning quiltmaker and then professionally long arm quilted by a quilter who has also won numerous awards. It has been in storage and has not been used, I have photographs (which is quite difficult with such a large quilt) if anyone is interested.

The fabrics alone cost over AUD1800. I've looked on eBay but that is full of rubbish and I doubt that a quilt of this quality would attract a reasonable bid.

If you have any suggestions, I'd be very grateful.

Hi Rob, sounds like you are in Australia. I'm in Queensland. You might contact Expertise Events and see if you can display it at one of their Craft & Quilt Shows. We have just had one this w/e at the Gold Coast here and many quilts displayed were for sale. You could still try e-bay with a realistic start bid on it. It would then stand out as a quilt of quality. You could also approach a local gallery to see if they would hang it. Sounds a lovely quilt - we would love to see a photo of it if you could post it here (in a webshots album perhaps).

Going by the fact that he quoted AUD and his email address uses his initials and the abreviation for Queensland I am guessing that he lives in Queensland, Australia.

Sorry I have no idea where to sell the quilt to get a reasonable price.

In the Central US, quilts are occasionally donated to charity auctions and sell very well. Of course, the charity keeps the sale proceeds, but the donor can take a tax deduction. Or you could see if a quilt shop would be willing to handle the sale for you, either by outright sale or "silent auction". If you put the quilt on E-Bay, be sure to do it with a reserve price and list it with lots of information and lots of very good photos.

Thank you everyone for your replies. Yes, I'm in Australia but I figured for the value of the quilt, it doesn't really matter where the buyer is, I can get it most places in the world airfreight for well under $100.

When I get some better photos I'll let you know where to get a peek and how I go with selling it.

Regards, Rob.
