Biscornu

Yup, that name got my attention, too, when a friend asked me how to pronounce it. It turns out that it refers -- in sewing terms -- to a sort of strange-looking pin cushion! If you google the term, you'll find that the most "traditional" versions are done in counted cross stitch or similar techniques. However, it's possible to make them from patchwork squares or even plain squares.

I had a few charm squares left over from my Confetti Cupcakes table runner, so that's what I used, and I have to say that I like the result. :) I've posted photos on my blog (below), though I'm afraid the photos are a bit fuzzy. I may replace them at some point, but I have to hurry over to DD's house to help her with her computer. After that, it's back to the quilt show to help hand out everyone's treasures. :)

that is really neat, Sandy. i think you've done a great job on that one. i love the extra machine embroidery added too.

it sent me off to google images to see lots more of those wee cuties. found one even crazier than the two sqs type.

Wow! Jeanne, I hadn't seen the 15-sided biscornu yet! That's amazing. If I knew more about how to do the stitching she shows for those snowflakes, I'd give it a try, but I think 15 different fabrics would only look "busy". What a cool pin cushion, though! Thanks for finding that. :)

Sandy: Wow, that is cool! I think it could be done with just 6 fabrics. Make identical 'top' and 'bottom' using five fabrics for each portion. Then use five squares of one 'neutral' fabric for the five side pieces. Example: five aunt Gracie top and bottom then a solid green for the side pieces; five medium batik top and bottom then a near solid black for sides. Oh the possibilities!!! Thanks to Jeanne for the original link and to Sandy for reprinting it. PAT in Virginia
