Blooms and Butterflies

I've been struck by how beautiful the flowers are this year, and I was going through some old photos of butterflies that I'd taken, and thought I might start a new project soon, with butterflies and flowers. Any thoughts?

Jenn, did you know there is an appliqué/quilting book by that name?

There are lots of other quilting/appliqué books with flowers and butterflies. It sounds like a great project! I say go fer it!

I love Carol Armstrong books! I have two of them and have used parts of several of her designs in quilts that I have made. Of course I love her patterns because they are all needle-turn applique which I love to do. One pattern is about a yard long and 1 1/2 foot high and is a collage of forest wildflowers. I have that on my to-do list. She uses mostly solid soft colors but the effect is really something. Oh to be retired and have lots of extra time.

Darcy Ashton's butterfly book has the most amazing and realistic butterflies you can imagine, as well as several projects that incorporate the butterflies beautifully. Of course, her patterns for butterflies can be made in fanciful fabrics rather than what nature dictates. I think when you're working with butterflies and flowers, you can't go wrong. A simple 9-patch, where the 5 dominant squares are made up of 16-patch or even 20-patch bright fabrics and the whole thing covered with butterflies would be stunning and easy peasy.

The main problem I see with this idea is narrowing down your choices! There are some lovely vintage butterfly patterns available, as well as the vintage flower blocks. You could go totally realistic using some of the patterns suggested in this thread. Here is an idea I just 'invented' ... make a Grandmother's Flower Garden top and appliqué butterflies over it. Or. ... The possibilities are endless. Have fun. Pat in Virginia, USA
