bobbin threads question

I just finished using my first bobbin filled with Madiera Bobbin-Fil. I think it was great, but maybe I'm imagining things. Do any of you use the specialty bobbin threads? What is the general consensus (as if there would actually be a consensus about anything other than chocolate!) about these types of bobbin threads?

I was always taught that the top thread and bottom thread must always be the same. Is that still the case?

I don't use bobbin threads but many, many quilters do and love them.

However, and interesting discussion has been going on over in the Janome

6500 yahoo group. A quilter had taken a top to her machine quilter and many seams popped. They had to be re-stitched before the top could be quilted. She had used a bobbin thread (lightweight poly) in the bobbin and it turned out that her hot iron had melted the thread. When the top was stretched taught, pop, there went all the seams. She contacted Superior threads and they confirmed that poly threads melt at 480 degrees F and a hot iron is over 500 degrees F.

Moral of the story - if you use poly be sure to adjust your ir> I was always taught that the top thread and bottom thread must always

Never been the case.

Top and bottom threads can be different but some sewing machines have difficulty balancing the tension with two different weight threads. It depends upon your sewing machine and to the user's ability to adjust their machine tension as to how happy a machine is sewing two different threads.

Two different threads of the same or very similar weight can more successfully be used.

Yes and No. How is that for an answer. It depends on what I am doing.

For my regular sewing and quilting, I've always used the same thread both top and bottom. That's what my Mom has done for 40+ years as well. We've never really had any problems except when our machines have needed a cleaning or tune-up.

When it comes to machine embroidery though, we both do use the specialty thread for the bobbin. Mom didn't believe it at first, and tried some other plain white or black thread, and had disastrous results. She has sewed thousands of hours on her embroidery machine and this always seems to be the case. I've never wanted to test the Gods on this.

Just our experience with our sewing. Hope this helps.

Not in my book. It's rare that I do that, because I use a lot of decorative and metallic threads. Usually whatever's in the bobbin works for me. Gen

I always use the same top and bottom for piecing and usually for quilting too. Although for quilting I will sometimes use a different colour in the bobbin than on the top. And in rare cases I may use the invisible nylon in the top and cotton on the bottom or vice versa depending on the fabrics I am using.

I do use a bobbin thread for machine embroidery though, it works just fine and saves on using up all the pretty thread for the bottom which you'll never be looking at!
