BOM rehashed

I'd be willing to jump in and make your BOM if you KIS [keep it simple]--no paper piecing as us beginners cant handle that yet :) If you have some blocks appliqued, have an alternate block for those who arent ready for applique :)

I think this would be sooo much fun!!! Everytime I try one at a quilt store I get bogged down by not being able to make the time, or instructions are purposely vague so you end up buying more fabric etc. One here would be perfect!!!! Not only would it fit my time constraints, I can't think of a better group of people to share with!!!

So many of you mentioned that a BOM would be fun to do that I decided to get one going. First try, contact a company called Kindred Spirits

) NAYY, to see if they might give us permission to set up a site with a pattern from an out of print book of theirs called Gatherings. The quilt is charming, sort of a country feeling quilt using pieced blocks and some applique, buttonhole stitches and a classic color palette of green, gold, red and black. They responded very quickly, telling me that if we wanted we could buy the pattern and instructions from them. Thats fine, its their product and they are welcome to make a profit from it. Im dissappointed that we wont be able to use it for free. Ahh well... time to think of something else, right? Right!! Im going to try to make a BOM, just for us here on RTCQ. Im going to ask for Karens help (since she started this whole thing.. lol) The plan right now is to make something for beginner quilters that isnt a sampler type quilt. Hopefully it will be something that will look nice in a variety of colorways and one that will inspire a lot of you to use it. Wish me luck!

Diana, running this up the flagpole to see who salutes it.

did they want each of us to buy the pattern? or buy one pattern and put it online for the rest of us? good grief, did they realize that we are the biggest quilting group in the world? the 'only' quilting newsgroup. i suppose if we each had to buy their pattern they'd make a bundle but they'd also lose out on the goodwill. being as the book/pattern is out of print seems to me its just being nice to allow us to do it probably getting them more ongoing online business afterwards but if thats how they want it... so much for their kindred spirits...

sokay, Di, we love ya and know you'll come up with a bootiful BOM. we also know that with all the ideas one can get from books, online etc its kinda hard not to have some quilts look a lot l like others. :) cant wait to see whatcha come up with. jeanne*

Diana, I too got tired of trying to find a BOM that I liked... So I created my own! Let me know if you want to see what I came up with. It's an easy patchwork sampler that I call my "Nearly Amish Sampler Quilt." I'm doing mine in bright vivid primary colors with black backgrounds. I'll see if I can't get my digital camera up and put a few pics up, if you'd like?

Otherwise, count me in for yours! I adore BOMs!

Good question star... it would help to know what might be stopping the reluctant appliquer... do they want no applique.. or maybe if the design just had a little bit.. would that suit? Thanks for asking! Di

i like .pdf with all the pages in one file. so much easier. i have no idea how to write them though. i dont have the acrobat writing software, guess i'd need that eh, lol. jeanne*

Thanks! Its always good to have more options. So, if my invention doesnt suit everyone they can choose from yours or any other of the many lovely designs available.. I sure appreciate your suggestion! Diana

Yes, I believe that was their hope. And you know star, I dont begrudge them the right to try to keep making profit off their designs. It is their business. I was just kind of proud of myself for getting up the nerve to ask. I wouldnt have used their design without permission but I wasnt really confident about asking. They were polite in their response. Of course, if anyone is interested in this particular quilt I would be happy to lend them my book. ;-) Having looked at their site I was a bit surprised to find they offer no freebies. Its not that its obligatory but it does build good will and insures people will remember their products and return to them. Diana

Do we need a pattern? There are so many quilt patterns out there. Why not follow a "Star" theme every month? That way it wouldn't really be a sampler quilt, just different Stars.

Diana, I just wanted to mention that us Webtv users can't download anything that uses Adobe Acrobat. We need to pull it up on the screen and print from the screen. We are unable to download because we don't have anything to "download" to. No hard drive or floppy disc with Webtv. So I hope you take this into consideration because I soooooo want to join in with your BOM. Thanks, Carol
