That sounds great. I've never done a BOM (I have too many UFOs already), but I'd definitely do this one.

If you are interested in making the appliqued version of the BOM that I am cooking up then you will need patterns... unless you feel comfortable drawing up your own simple shapes. You make a good point tho. Its quite possible to pick from the gazillion or so really lovely blocks out there and make your own BOM by working them up, one a month, in colors that you think will look wonderful together. If you do that I am sure others would love to see and share your pattern too! Diana

Thank you, I hadnt thought of this! We can figure something out for anyone who doesnt have a way to print out patterns but wants to do the applique version. Some librarys will print up pages for you for a nominal fee.. or .. perhaps one of us can print and send pages to the printerless participants. You wont be left out just for lack of techie geekiness! I know how she feels. There are some things I just want someone to show me rather than read how.

Hullo Diana Have you thought of using different sized blocks? This would take away from the usual sampler look; and if you organised it yourself you could make sure that they all fit together beautifully. I love the look of mixing squares with rectangles particularly. It is hardly any more difficult to create the design. You can use sashing in a similar way as if they were all square. Just a thought? . In article , Diana Curtis writes

Yes, that is what I had in mind, a BOM made up of all different stars. Samplers are nice but I'm not keen on them.

I've never done stars but I think the idea of a BOM is to learn new techniques? And wouldn't you learn different techniques in making different stars? And a quilt would have the same sort of theme throughout?

Ann...(just using "stars" as an example of course....could be anything and keep with a theme)

Well you would not need a pattern template per se if you just used rotary cut strips, rectangles, sqs, triangles and specified the size. Otherwise you cound write the inches the templace is supposted to be on each side of the template.

What about going to Quilters cache? She must have oodles... or .. am I missing the point?? You want a BOM that is made up of all stars but doesnt look like a traditional sampler? Hmmmmmmm..... Diana

That is exactly what I was thinking of Patti! A non sampler sampler... with enough variation in the different blocks that it wouldnt look like same old same old. I wish everyone could see the quilt that inspired me to offer... the blocks are all different sizes, and the sashings are almost randomly placed. Its just fun, but the colors tie it into a very attractive whole. Elena has volunteered to help me with setting up some color choice pictures to help folks visualize what their color choices might look like. Heck, if what I come up with doesnt suit someone then maybe the next one will! Diana

No, really, they can't download things on WebTV because there is no hard drive to download to or anything like that. It really isn't a computer, it's nothing more than an internet interface. They have real printers that we can hook up to a computer the same...

That doesn't matter either way though....it just means we'll have to do a few extra things so that no one gets left out! *VBG*

That works for the pieced blocks for sure, and would save a lot of printing, but I was thinking of those appliqued bits.. for those who dare to adventure into that venue. Diana

There are BOMs with themes.. in this case I was going to try making the theme the fabric that each person uses to bring it to life. Ann, I hope to make something that pleases the vast majority of those of you interested, but I may not please everyone.. gees.. its almost a certainty...especially if you consider Ive never done anything like this before. With all of you cheering me on and giving me good ideas I think the results will be.. ummm.. interesting! Diana
