Who likes BOM's and why? Who doesn't and why?

I like BOMs because I am new to quilting and it gives me practise making different kinds of blocks. Also I can work on several at once without being guilty of not finishing them ASAP. BOMs also gives me ideas for future projects--like I REALLY need more ideas :) I like the FREE BOMS as posted on the web because I dont have to pay for the pattern. I can also use individual parts of the pattern for other projects later.

I am working on:

1) Chaos Harmony

I have thetop done and have pics posted for the top half. Waiting on quilting it 'tilI can get the backs on straight:) 2) My Stars and Bars (My Way)

I am almost done with thisone 'cause I found months 4-11 elsewhere on the web; I am substituting theflag row with a white bar row. 3) Penguins Play

'cause Ithought it would be cute hanging in my sewing area. 4) Anilee BOM Mystery

I made allmy blocks different colors; these blocks are 2-color blocks of sqs and HST.I dont know If I will make this a bed quilt, lap quilt or make them intotable toppers. The best part of this one is that the blocks are written upin 3 different sizes--mine are the 18" size 'cause bigger is better :) 5) DownhomeQuilting

Thiswas the FIRST quilt I ever bought fabric for; needless to say I am gettingbetter at picking out fabric for new patterns The first 3 had pictures of the finished product so you know if you like it and what colors you might want for the whole quilt. I am printing out other BOMs I have found but not at present working on them.

I like BOMs because they give you a sense of finishing each month. The fact that it's just a block doesn't seem to matter, it's still Done! Several BOMs also are mystery quilts where they tell you to make 26 of this unit, and you only use four in this month. So it seems like you have a head start on the other months. It feels better, putting it away until next time, than a regular quilt moving from WIP to UFO status.

The only thing I don't like is that sometimes I feel like I'm on a roll, and then I have to stop and wait a WHOLEEE Month for the next instructions. bummer. :)

I like the free instructions, because I can print them off and do them at my own pace. I often take an applique project to work (do it at lunch) or on the bus or on the train...

I like BOM's because it gives me a few hours out with some friends and then after picking up our BOM we go out to eat. Also with a time limit, I do get my block done.. I don't like them because since I am at the quilt shop and see fabric (that always seem jump in my arms) I spend more money than I need to.. Michele from Ohio

I've never done one, but think that finishing something in the time limit would appeal to me. Will try one in the future also a mystery quilt is on my list of must do's : )

I can offer you the best of both worlds: tooting my own horn again....there's a Mystery quilt on my page that's presented as a block-of-the-month. Folks had lots of fun with this one--it runs over 15 months rather than 12, but the last two months are assembling the quilt top. The URL for the Mystery start page is:

I have been looking at BOM's but haven't decided to try one yet. The mystery quilts sound like they might be fun - I will have to check into that as well. Anyway, my point is that I didn't know whether I wold enjoy doing one , now I can see all the pros and cons by what is posted here and decide! Thanks

the mail every month. I get enough fabric with the instructions to make two 12" squares each month. This one is designed for beginners and it taught me a lot about block construction. It has given me the confidence to try different colours and blocks that I would not normally choose. The price is the same as a good magazine ...that was another factor in my descision.I have very litle spare time so this is one way I can devote some time to something relaxing every month.

Kathy, I'm working on almost all the same BOM's as you. I'm not doing the penquin quilt as that's not my thing but almost everything else. I too did the Chaos Harmony quilt. It turned out beautifully. I LOVE BOM's because you can do your monthly thing and then move on to something new. I'm currently working on 4 BOM's (and just finished one). I'm also working on a BOM that I'm getting from Fons' and Porter with 1890's prints. I think that one is gonna be really nice too. I've printed out a couple of mysteries but I'm waiting to see the finished "clue" and the finished quilt top before starting them. I think BOM's are great and I'm constantly looking for free ones on the web. A lot of sites give you the blocks each month and then leave you to do whatever with the block. I love the sites that actually give you a quilt to work on with your BOM's. Hugs, Carol

I wanted to do the HGTV one, but it was so badly written! They didn't even inclide measurements of the finished block every month!

It would have been beautiful though.

Charlie.

That one sounds interesting. Can you tell me where you got it?

Would you be tempted to do a BOM that isnt a kit? Im working on a project right now to see if we can get permission to put up directions for a sampler quilt someplace online. You'd get to use whatever fabrics suit your budget and aesthetics. Diana

Would love to try it! Especially if it is something that can be worked on in stages so I can finish other WIPs. Linda

Free? Maybe Diana ... got too many UFO and WIP and been lazy, but I'll think about it. 8-)

BTW: by expensive I mean the patterns with out fabric, as well as the kits. Those $5 and up patterns for each month are way pricey for me.
