Border opinions please!

I have created a "Ufo" album in webshots where those sort of items will sit and wait

The blue scrappy was finally stitched together yesterday (it was a good atmospheric day for sewing!) - now I have to consider my options for bordering it. The blocks are 11" finished and the quilt top is queen-sized and currently measures 88" x 88". The quilt is intended for my sister&bro/law who will have been married 58yrs on the 20th - why wait until the quilt is finished? - for their 60th??? I might add that on their wedding day, I was a 6month old babe, in case anyone is wondering........and I have the pictures to prove it!

I am thinking about a plain narrow strip to stop the golds and yellows but then using varying rectangles of all the fabric colours to make up a wider border OR carrying the golds and yellows out into the borders but using only one of the blues ....... please offer any suggestions.

Thanks in advance, jennellh (@gmail.com)

I'd make a narrow border using bits of all the golds/yellows, then a wider, piano-key type border of pieces of all the blues. It's going to be gorgeous whatever you do.

That is *really* gorgeous! I appreciate your decision not to wait until their 60th, too--a version of "Eat Dessert First". I'd go for your first suggestion of the narrow strip and then rectangles....altho', as I look at it again, you might not even need the gold strip; maybe just go with the rectangles. Bind it with gold if you want to add a dash of it.

yes.

Either would work. Depends on how much of what fabrics you have and so on. I like the idea of the narrow border then the wider scrappy pieced border, perhaps with a final narrow border and/or binding to match the first narrow border??

Looks good. Pati, in Phx

Naturally, I was detracted by the charms of Winston and had to go over and admire Mr. Cute. He is just so dear. Meanwhile, back to the quilt - it's lovely. To decide how to finish, how about putting it on a bed and doing an audition of border possibilities? One of them will say 'yes', assuming of course that you don't have too much help from Winston. What a lovely quilt. I love it (and as is well known, I don't usually 'do' scrappy - I think I must be the leopard that is changing her spots!!). Anyway: yes, I like the idea of a narrow, then a scrappy border; and I really like Pati's idea of a second narrow border. You could then bind with different fabrics joined together. You know you have some reds showing in the pretty blocks? Could you audition a red narrow border? It might be too outrageous, but I thought I'd mention it - I can't tell without trying it, though. . Howdy!

Oh be still my heart! It's scrappy & I'm in love!

If you want to "stop the golds & yellows", a narrow border in dark blue would do it; that way the colors of the blocks don't bleed into the border; dark blue (darker than any other blue you've used on the edges of those blocks) will frame the pieced top and say "I meant to stop here" while staying w/ one of the main colors in your quilt blocks (blue!). A scrappy border, different from your block pattern but w/ the same fabrics, including those golds & yellows, would be gorgeous. I hope you Finish it soon 'cause I'm tired of waiting. (Okay, so I don't *do* UFOs.) I also hope you behaved yourself at the wedding; being a baby is no excuse! ;-P

Cheers! (free opinions are worth the price!)

R/Sandy-- this is not a "narrow" border but the yellow does say, "Scraps: st> I have created a "Ufo" album in webshots where those sort of items

RM--I just LOVE that quilt of yours; it's about time I told you that. Inspiring for sure! What gave you the nerve to do it? I don' t know if I could ever stretch that much but it works so well!

I'd pick a bright blue, a darker blue, and a gold. Do a medium border in the brighter of the two blues, a narrow border of gold, and then a final wider border of the darker blue for the outer border. Debra in VA See my quilts at

IMO it would look wonderful with a narrow strip of dark blue, then a scrappy row of flying geese, then more dark blue. But that's a lot of geese! Roberta in D

Hi Roberta, you are right when you say "that's a lot of geese" and Ragmop probably would give up waiting for the finish. It is a possible though for a small 4-block cloth that I'll put together to test out the options. I have 4 residual blocks that I can use to audition the ideas. Thank you for sending your suggestion, jennellh

Thank you, Sandy - I'm pleased that you approve of my blue scrappy! I'm going to put together the 4 residual blocks into a border option test cloth - should be fun to work on. I do think that the narrow border will need to be a different colour to stop the flow of yellow/ gold - will have to audition the choices available in the stash. I enjoyed looking at all your photos again - keep on sending the links! jennellh

Hi Patti - could this be the beginning of a 'conversion'? The red/ rust is also a colour option and one that I will audition. Thank you for mentioning it, jennellh.

Hello, Miss Polly, Winston's new game this week is to play-attack his image in the fridge door and then take off to hide from the other cat that never seems to chase him! When I next go to my sister's, I'll be taking the quilt top with me (hoping that I can persuade her to do the pressing - shouldn't be too hard) and I will have to do the measurements on their bed to know how wide the borders can be - also to let them grow accustomed to the colours - the backing fabric that I have is a neutral toile so it is completely opposite to the top colours. jennellh

I'll be setting up an all-options 4-block cloth to audition the possibles and I will try out the non-strip approach as well. Thank you for your suggestion, jennellh.
