Buying Sheets for Backing

I've never used a sheet to back a quilt, but all the ladies around here seem to do it. I know that it's not a good idea when hand-quilting because the thread-count is so dense. But is there any reason not to use one when you're machine-quilting?

Thanks!

I do, Sherry. There's a very interesting chain of salvage stores here on the Mississippi coast. Now and then they'll offer sheets that are lovely and sometimes I can bring home some for future quilts. Backing a quilt with a sheet and having a matching sheet set for the bed makes a very nice, inviting bed. Probably not a good influence if you are as nap-addicted as I am.

Thanks, Polly! This kind of makes me want to slap myself on the forehead and go "D'oh". Why didn't I ever think of that? I've used regular fabric before when I wanted to compliment the color of the quilt, and not use regular muslin. Besides not liking the seam down the middle, it is very expensive to do that! I'm off to the white sales now.

I use sheets all the time! I hate piecing backs. I also use double width cotton designed for curtains, if it's not too heavy. Roberta in D

I've used sheets to back quilts when I did a Tie Quilt and again for a Quilt As You Go. Barbara in FL

They do it here in TN also. I started using colored sheets with my second quilt. Any leftovers went into more quilts so there was no waste.

I know that it's not

I had no problem. I use a metal thimble.

Do a small wall hanging and see how it works on your machine.

I love using sheets because I can get them in so many colors and there's no seam.

I just did a small baby quilt using an old duvet/quilt cover as a backing and it worked just fine. I think it worked well as it was well used, lovely and soft. MOst of the sheets I've seen on sale here are polycotton though, not 100% cotton (if that's important to you). Morag

Bottom sheets usually wear out long before top sheets. I go to the thrift stores to find them. They are especially nice for kids' quilts.
