Yesterday I began to get my supplies gathered for the 4 workshops I've signed up for. whew. there's a lot of work! Can't wait! With all the events and workshops to attend, and the meals that must be eaten, and the sleep that must be slept - how will I ever have time to shop?!?
This year they have invited guilds to display their raffle quilts and sell tickets. Ours is a version of Cathedral Stars, a Bonnie Hunter design. It was coordinated by former RCTQer Julie-in-Antioch (who is now Julie-in-Wadsworth). [You can see it at

Julie and I will be there on Saturday to look and to shop. I haven't been to the show since 2004, having had obligations the show weekend in the intervening years. In 2003 (the first Rosemont show) I took TDB and got a bunch of RCTQ signatures. (TDB =3D The Damn' Banner, a large RCTQ souvenir created by Sarah Curry. Where is it now, BTW?)
My friends and I noticed that people seemed to be buying less at the recent Lancaster, PA show. Some of the vendors were also complaining. Because of the economy it seems that quilters are trying to use up what they have! I'm anxious to hear how your show goes.
When attending the Rosemont show it is very important to shop on Thursday night during what they call The Preview. There are fewer people squished into the isles and you can actually get into the booth and see the merchandise. I plan to be there Thursday when the show opens at 5 p.m.and close it down when they throw out the last attendee. I won't see any of the quilts on display unless they happen to be on a path from the door to the vendors.
My plan of attack will be the same as in the past. (didn't get to go last year because Mom was in the hospital) First I run to all the booths selling antique quilts. I allow myself to purchase one antique quilt a year and this show has proven to be a good place to find that special piece. Once that big purchase is decided I will systematically visit all the booths looking for merchandise that is new or different from our local shops. In the past I have purchased a lot of African fabrics to use in wall hangings for the inner city ministry. Since Mom is staying with us I am not volunteering in the inner city so will limit that type of purchase to something really special. I like to browse the book dealers who specialize in quilt history books. Tool demos are also interesting. Sometime during the evening I must take a Coke break and rest my tired feet.
Sunday afternoon my husband and I will return to see the quilts.
If you are planning on being at the show please check The Quilt Merchant booth. This is the store where I taught before moving Mother here. It specializes in reproduction fabrics. If there are any quilts on display with a lot of hand embroidery I did most of the embroidery. That is something I find very relaxing while sitting with Mom during her anxious times. If you are a Jo Morton fan this booth will be selling her latest fabric line which arrived this week just in time for the show. If you are planning on being at the show either Thursday night or Sunday afternoon please email me privately and I will give you my cell phone number. Maybe we can meet!
Sniff sniff......I'm missing both the Chicago and Paducah shows this year.....how will I ever manage? A nearby guild chartered a bus for a day trip, but I was afraid my leg just couldn't handle it yet. There have been a couple days that I've thought the grocery store was getting bigger and bigger as I walked around. Can you imagine what the Rosemont show would feel like? Not this year. But look out NEXT year!!!!! I hope to make up for lost time!!!!! I hope everyone who is attending one or both of these shows has a great time.....think of me as you shop the merchant mall.
ok - if anyone is going to be there on Friday, I'm planning on being "Selvedge Head". Lyn's gonna help me tie a bunch of selvedge edges in my hair as long as I promise not to hang out anywhere near her, or associate with her. I'm tall, and will be the only one at the show with fabric selvedges tied in my hair haphazardly.
And Musicmaker while you and Lynn are on your way to Chicago I will already be haveing a blast at the DJ Retreat in Shipse. In. I can't wait. I have been told that we will be doing a lot of shopping and eating and SOME quilting. Will have pixs to show when I get back or if I can get an internet connection will send some from there.
Sandy, I base my statement on experience - no one really, deliberately, makes a fool of themselves for the fun of it. I'm the only person I know willing to do that. (: Musicmaker
