Desert Island Quilt books/tools/notions

For those who don't know Desert Island Discs, it is a program on the radio in the UK where a guest is invited on, and asked which 8 pieces of music, one book and one luxury item they would take, if stranded on a desert island. This program has been broadcast since 1942.

How about we have a Quilter's Desert Island Discs thread, where we each list the 8 books/tools/notions, etc and one luxury we would take, if we knew we would be stranded on a desert island?

  1. Huge fabric stash
  2. Largest spool ever made of medium gray cotton thread
  3. Rotary cutter
  4. Large mat
  5. Box of 1,000 spare rotary blades
  6. 8X24 ruler
  7. Humongous roll of freezer paper
  8. Gross of milliner's needles- size 12

(I prefer making tops to finished quilts, so batting is optional.)

I agree with most of your list but your luxury item is the best. I don't do much hand work so I'd need a sewing machine with necessary bits like bobbins, oil, feet, etc. I agree with the gray thread. I just don't want to be deserted on an island unless it was populated by other quilters, sort of like a prolonged retreat. Donna in Bellevue

We've already BTDT post Katarina with no water or electricity or roads for weeks. I like Leslie's list too but I'd have to add: cold beer and Psalm

Okey-dokey! I'll take the case of thread. But with a litter of Goldens and no vet to spay/neuter, I'd prolly be too busy playing fetch to do any quilting. Golden (retriever) heaven!

I love Leslie's list.

Mine? Hm...

Several tons of dog food and the biggest roll of poo bags on the planet Ditto roll of batting! Ditto roll of plain cotton sateen fabric, extra wide... Ditto basting thread... Ditto hand quilting thread A ginormous box of hand quilting needles in the hand sewing box A ton of very sharp pencils and a sharpener The best hand quilting book you hand quilters can recommend.

I'll borrow the ruler when no-one else is using it... I'm going to learn to hand quilt properly while we're there!

You don't need to be on a desert island to learn to HQ, Kate. Come up here and we shall sit in the sunshine and drink Pimm's whilst we do it, and the menfolk can feed us at regular intervals.

We could also sneak off to Scarborough or Bombay stores when we get the urge, or even that place over the way.

Always happy to teach, and to learn, and to chat.

Open house. Just give me enough time to put the kettle on.

Goes for the rest of the Group too.

Pimms - guaranteed good food for slimmers. After all, it should have a slice of cucumber in there!

Desert Island - what about Barbara Brackmans Encyclopaedia of Block Patterns? Or one of those wonderful old books that explained all the stitches with pencil drawings - that should keep me stumped for a number of years while Kate and Leslie grow the dog population:-)

I'm close enough to take you up on that offer Nel! Google tells me I am about an hour's drive.

I would take a treadle machine, my stash all in one box, quilting tools all in one box, thread in one box, my 6 QIs, and a very big looooong cold beer 'cause desert islands are hot and my pillow.

Lizzie, You'd be welcome. I'll email you my phone number.

And yes, Chris can cook, but I can also let the Aga take the strain.

I've just bottled six two-litre bottles of ginger beer, yesterday; the elderflower champagne will be ready in a week. Pimm's Number 1 cup is usually served with cucumber, mint, apple and lemon. We used to add borage flowers, but I haven't got any at the moment: my garden is such a mess. I usually use full strength, best lemonade as a mixer, but ginger ale/beer is good too.

Does anyone remember the time when PImm's had at least 12 different bases? A year or two ago they brought out #11 again, but I haven't seen any of the others for years. #1 is gin; #11 was vodka (I think); but there were brandy, whisky and rum ones, at least.

As for the desert island; I'll bring thimbles (lots of different ones) some good urea-based hand-cream and a staple gun with refills. There would be enough wood to make hoops and frames, and everyone would want a different size or shape. I better bring some decent wood glue, too.

And #10 betweens. Anyone good at keeping bees?

With your talk on this post about food, I just have to ask, is this a desert island [as in deserted not much there] or desert island [as in sweets after a meal]??

Hmm, perhaps a whole new list of things to take, or as a group we can divvy up the list of who brings what!

Chris is a very good cook, and so is Alan. Goodness knows what they'd feed us if they got in cahoots, though! Especially if you let Alan loose with the Aga and that interesting espresso coffee gadget...

If we have Soay sheep, they don't need to be sheered: thy shed their wool by themselves. :)

Little brown sheeps, they are... >
