Diamonds and Bars - Amish Quilts

This afternoon I was lucky and could visit an exhibition of Amish Quilts. It was the same , Roberta in Munich has told about. The quilts are incredible. If you imagine some fabrics alone, they are dull and boring, but these women put them together and the quilts sparkle and shine. And these stitches, what workmanship, at least most of them :-)) I've seen so many beauties this afternoon, some in such good condition, I'm wondering if they were used . Would have loved to have Robertas guided tour :-) Heidi

I live in the area of Ohio, that has a very large Amish and Mennonite community. Every year the Mennonite Relief agency, holds a quilt sale and auction to raise money for their Relief work. The local Amish and Mennonite women work all year to produce some of the most wonderful quilts that they sell. It is a great place to acquire those type of quilts, but it has been "discovered", by people from out of state who do tend to bid up the quilts in order to acquire them. I guess since the money goes to Relief work, it is ok, but you used to be able to acquire a quilt for much less, but not since since it has been "discovered". They do sell them in the local quilt galleries also; usually for a bit less money due to the bidding up that takes place during the Auction. They are a singularly unique people, who are very dedicated to their lifestyle, which is focused on their religion, family, and community.

I probably asked you this before, John -- but where in Ohio are you? My guild goes to Berlin in the fall... what a wonderful place. We'll be in Shipshewana, IN the end of March -- I am anxious for that too!

I live in Fredericktown, Knox county. It is in the next county west from Holmes, which is the county where Berlin is. We are not as touristy as Holmes county is. Incidentally, Most people think that there are more Amish/Mennonite in Pennsylvania, but Holmes County has the largest population of them, anywhere. It is really very lovely driving around Homes County and seeing the Amish, going about their lives. We looked long and hard to buy there, when we first moved here, but everything was very pricey and out of our reach.

Did you see the catalog too? A section at the back showed photos of all the quilt backings. I loved it that so many of them had wild floral prints on the back! Roberta in D

no, I didn't see any catalog, a big book, but it was 50 Euro, and that was a bit too much for me. I looked through it, but I didn't stumble over backings. I was very tempted to lift the quilts a bit to take a look at the back, but I was a good girl and didn't touch them :-)) Heidi "Roberta Zollner" schrieb:
