Down Under Quilt Show Report - longish

Having been not so gently prompted by Dee to give over my report, here 'tis!

Jayne/Giraffe and I arrived at Jeff's Shed (Melbourne Exhibitiion Centre) for the Needlework, Craft and Quilt Fair (or some such title) at about 12pm. The first place we headed too, after entering to win a new Bernina, was the Quilt Show. Oh heaven's! Those quilts are just downright unbelieveable. How can so many talented people live here and I don't know them!

From the quilt of a stockman in shadow walking out of a blazing orange background with silhouettes of jackaroos, to the simplicity of just simple rectangles of bright colours in diagonal rows, to other quilts that are just beyond description they were so good. People must have thought I was mentally challenged because all I could keep saying was "oh my god".

After a quick coffee and sandwich we then headed to the "buy" part of the show. Everyone who was there last year was there again and I found most of the fabric was pretty similar to last year also. I found 3 FQ's of autumn toned flannel for me, and 4 FQ's of lovely hand dyes for DH's quilt. Jayne went crazy with the orange FQs which were 3.50 each. and after being totally in awe of the Japanese quilts that were on show (not allowed to take photos - Boo Hoo!) we headed home to 2 very relieved daddies who had been babysitting.

A great day was had by both of us and I know I'm looking forward to next year. All of you join in encouraging me to get Jayne to enter one of her (I think) spectacular quilts into the show.

Oh Heavens indeed, Sharon! I had a wonderful time. I kept saying "wow look at this" and 'wow look at that' all the time. My city dwelling sisters-in-law reckoned it was because I don't get out from the bush much. I think it's because I get strangely childlike when I'm enjoying myself. If I had to pick a favourite, I wouldn't know where to start. The double wedding ring quite impressed me, and the quilt made from doilies, by Heather Tomlin. Roll on next year!

Oooh Yes! I loved the doily one too - and what about that one - the star one that was really bright colours with a black border and what looked like swirlies in the corners? Do you think we can meet up next year?

It would be great to meet up. BTW, I just got back from town after raiding a couple of thrift shops in search of doilies. I also found an embroidered tablecloth that I can do something with.

LOL - you are worse than I am! After hearing about all these quilts found in thrift stores I've been scouring all the ones in my area, but someone must have beaten me to it - I haven't found a single one!

What are you going to do with the doilies??

I saw a quilt years ago that had them sewn onto solid colors and made into a quilt. I pick them up at charity shops when I travel as souvenirs and put them in a box where they sit. Maybe you will inspire me

G'day Mim

I could draw it quicker than explain, but I have in mind to cut them into quarters and stitch them onto a dark value background, so that they take on a fan shape in one corner. Cutting them makes a few doilies go a long way.

Best wishes

There's a pattern I just found in the September issue of McCall's Quick Quilts, on 16. It's called Rhapsody in Bloom, and is very pretty. It's only about 47" X 56", but I'm sure a few more rows in each direction and a border or two would soon make it bigger. The doilies are used in halves.

Sounds nice, Kate, but I'm not sure if that pattern book is available down here. I've never seen it here - that's not to say it's not available though.
