Embroidered Bible Blocks

My nephew's new wife inherited some vintage blocks from her great grandmother and has asked if I could make them into a quilt for her. There are 13 of them that I would like to put into chronological order, with "He is Risen" at the top, and "In a Manger" at the bottom. The first one has plain blocks on either side of it, the others are joined in 4 sets of 3 blocks each. I'm guessing that great grandma had plans to just put them all together. NW doesn't really care how make it, she trusts me to "just make them look nice". I'm thinking I would like to put them in a garden path setting, or at least sashing between them all. My religious knowledge is so very rusty, I'm hoping you can help me correction place them in order? Any other opinions or suggestions? You can see them all at Picasa

Mickie,

I don't profess to be an expert, but I'd put them in this order, starting with In a Manager: The Shepherds The Wisemen The Carpenter In the Temple Healing the sick Jesus & the children Entering Jerusalem The Last Supper In the Garden He is Risen

I vote with Louise. That's the Biblical order, and I think it will be lovely in a quilt.

Those are wonderful, Mickie!

I agree with the order that Louise put them in -- how about arranging them in a circle or spiral, so that "He is Risen" is in the center?

Okay. Louise has the order right and Nann's suggestion is great. Now. Next, I think you must take them to an LQS and study what sashing will let those gentle colors prevail instead of being overwhelmed. I'd like to be part of that adventure. Do let us know what calls to you and what you choose. What a treasure. Polly

Hi, Mickie What beautiful blocks! and how wonderful that you were chosen to put them all together. I like Louise's ideas and putting them in the right order. Maybe with a visit to a LQS you will find the perfect sashing to use...something like soft angels color on color. I think I would also use little blocks between the sashing in small type of garden thing or even a fabric where you have to special cut to get a cross or something similar.

Please do share the final quilt.

There is a Christian fabric section over at

I don't see anything there that calls to me to go with your embroidered blocks but simply studying their fabrics might trigger some ideas. Their 'footprints' fabric might be just right or all wrong. I have a little of it here and would be glad to send it to you just to see if they play well together. Polly

Thanks Louise, this is exactly what I wanted! I'm planning on starting at the bottom right corner with the Manger, and then work upward right to left on the bottom row, left to right on the next, and so on, ending with the Risen at the top. I thought I would set them in rows, 3-blocks, 2 blocks, 3 blocks, 2 blocks, 3 blocks, but Nann suggested a circle.... hmmmm Thanks again, Mickie

Thanks for confirming the order of things, Sunny ;o) Mickie

Yes Donna, I wanted them in logical order, thus the reason for my post here ;o) I have a few ideas as far as the sashing, I'm thinking pieced (squares?) in muted earthy tones to not overwhelm the mustard color of the blocks. Since the blocks might be off-set, maybe a garden setting wouldn't work so well... I'll share the final quilt, and likely more design options along the way. Thanks, Donna! Mickie

Circle or spiral? Hmmm... I will have to play around with all these ideas. Thank goodness I have EQ! LOL

Thank you for confirming the right order of things! I will play around in EQ with the all the settings I have in mind now (thanks to everybody here) although the mustard background on these is anything but gentle! LOL I will share the designs I come up with as they occur. Thanks for your input, Polly, Mickie

I like the footprints too, (and really like the Green Words to Ponder) but I think I will just keep it simple with tone on tone and small print fabrics that read solid. Thanks for the link. Mickie

Tow of the blocks are not on this list, Flight to Egypt and Feeding the Multitude. Where should I put them? I would guess Flight would be after the Wisemen, and maybe Feeding before or after Healing? Mickie

Sorry I missed a couple, Mickie. Yes, I'd put Flight to Egypt after the Wisemen, and Feeding could go either before or after healing. There are so many examples of healing, I think it would be hard to determine (well, *I* couldn't determine) which came first.

Oooohh Susan, can you please share a picture and details of the pattern? With copywrites in mind, is there a website or someplace where I can see the finished quilt or maybe order the pattern? Mickie

Here are two that I found online, not quilts but iron on embroidery transfers:
