Well, I'd heard about this, but never witnessed first hand. We stumbled across an estate sale today and I'm poking around in a big trunk in the garage and this woman had a stash to be proud of, half of which is now in some state of being washed as it was all rather musty smelling.

I'm not sure how much of it is cotton, there's a LOT of, um, would you call it "gingham"? it's checked, a woven check, white and blue, or red, or green, purple, black, brown, I think seven or so white-and-some color. In small checks and in big checks. If this is what you've been looking for, email me privately, I'm happy to share, I don't know what I will ever do with all of it. I can scan a swatch and email too if you want to see.

Anyway, two plastic grocery bags full of fabric, and two baggies of thread, needles and other assorteds - $12. Not bad, that's some cheap S.E.X.! Also picked up some lovely runners, I think you'd call them, with little flowers cross-stitched, very pretty. I put them on some furniture I just got in the bedroom, they look very nice. And a lovely flowery sugar and creamer, small ones tho, very cute.

Hubby got a shovel, which looks remarkably like this other shovel he has. Feeling quite sure he could say the same about some of the fabric (not to mention several pairs of shoes), I let it pass. :)

Sounds like fun! And shovels are like sewing machines - there's always room for a spare, just in case... ;)

Sounds like gingham, all right. Test it to see if it is all cotton. Most available gingham nowadays is poly/cotton. Your "runners" sound like what we called "dresser scarves" back when most all girls to embroider.
