Experience with Bernina BSR?

Are there any of you enjoying the BSR on a Bernina? John recently posted that he'd brought a BSR home but I don't think he's had much mileage at FM. I'm thinking about getting a newer Bernina with the BSR but have heard some grumbling about its ability to function smoothly when trying to read a busy print (or something). Please share with me your evaluation if you have one and love / hate / feel totally indifferent. Polly

I am awaiting a large plexiglas extension table, before I delve into it. I probably won't be doing too much free motion stuff as I don't really care for that look. I plan on using it for following patterns laid out on the quilt top for background quilting. I have used it a couple of times to see if it was working and it does work. You can use it either controlled by a button on the machine or by the traditional foot control. It also has 2 modes of use, one that activates it by moving the fabric, and one that starts it off by the button/foot pedal and it continues until stopped by those controls. I too had heard that the BSR did not like to play with certain red fabrics. I think that was a folk myth propagated by other machine manufactures. I watched a demonstration by a Bernina rep doing free motion quilting on a series of red fabrics to disprove that myth. She said they always use the reds so that people can see there is no compatibility issues. If you are considering buying a Bernina with the ultimate goal of using the BSR, it is cheaper, in the long run, to get one that comes with it as part of the model. They also come with Quilting Feet as part of the pkg. If you buy one of the ones that come without, the total cost will be greater when you add it all up after purchasing it separately. Sorry for the incomplete review, but until I get the table, I won't be able to comment further. That and a multitude of projects that would preclude any real use/testing at this time.

If you don't hear from Sandy in Las Vegas soon, send her a message. I am pretty sure she has experience with BSR. Her quilts are lovely, no matter how she does it!

Thanks, Pat. I can wait. Patience is my virtue. Everybody ought to have at least one. Polly

Don't get me started! I *LOVE* my BSR, Polly. Seriously LOVE. I tried for several years (8?) to free-motion quilt, and the problem was always the same: good design, uneven stitches. The BSR fixed all of that for me.

I have heard of some people who have had problems (not usually on a busy print; usually on a particular color -- maybe red?), but I'm not one of them -- so far, at least. I have used it on red with no problems and on lots of other colors. I *think* that the problem experienced by these people may have been fixed by the last update to the software in the BSR.

The BSR will not do the quilting for us, of course, and it *is* possible to defeat it by trying to go too fast or jerking the quilt sandwich wildly. I've done that, but it's my fault, not the fault of the BSR.

Want to come over and play with mine to see if you like it?

Oh yes. I do. Is it true what they say about Las Vegas? Polly

Hi Polly, I have the BSR, but I still consider myself to be a early beginner at free motion. Having seen some of your work, I'm not sure you would need the gadget. Have you tried it at the shop? I think that you should decide what machine you want to buy first and if the BSR is part of the package go for the deal. You don't have to use it, but it might come in handy. I just spent two days using mine, I'd be lost without the contraption. Bonnie NJ

I have it, but honestly don't use it much. Unless it is a very complex pattern, I get better results without it. I've had difficulty on solid black fabric and on some prints. I've also had some issues with the recall of it for updating. The problem was many of these would suddently speed up for no reason. I finally did get it updated, although I had to pay a "service charge" for the free repair. All in all, it rates an OK.

Just tonight on the tv news, they were showing some women streaking nekkid through a casino. All they'd report about me is that old lady sure needs to iron her suit. Polly

I want to thank you all for your thoughtful responses and, of course, Val, for tossing in a little sunshine. I'm thinking the BSR might be like the walking foot thing that I've never taken out of the box. Just don't know. There is a quilt show in Pensacola coming up this month. Maybe there'll be a Bernina vendor there that will let me have a test drive. I so much appreciate you. Polly

I really like the BSR. It works even better when you read the book and turn it on right. I haven't noticed any difference in the fabric you use--and, I use some pretty busy stuff.

Happy quilting,

Lenore

Polly, if Derrell's (the Pensacola Bernina dealer) isn't at the show, maybe you can make it out to his store. It is on Davis Highway--not to hard to get to from Downtown. I was hoping to make it to the show but have to work Thursday and not sure if I can make that 6 hour drive after a 12 hour day in surgery : > ( (Still thinking about it though!!)

Polly, I'm hoping to leave on Thursday night and visit with my Mom and sister. If I get to go, we'll probably go to the show on Friday--my Mom and sister help out my youngest son who is recently divorced and and has custody of their 4 year old daughter by keeping her on the weekends while he works. And as much as I love her, I think the quilt show will be a bit much for her LOL and she goes to daycare during the week.
