First time guild member

After moving to PA last year, I was looking for a quilting group or guild to join. The one nearest to me has a limit of 50 members...and wouldn't you know it...I was #51!! But I'm patient, and was able to join this past week. At my first meeting (a wonderful Christmas lunch), I won two door prizes (a book, and a kit with every size Thangle plus 15 patterns to go with them). Also, in the gift exchange I got a curved ruler and a book that explains how to use it. In a fabric drawing (each participant puts in a fat quarter) of snowflake fabrics, I won 23 fat quarters!

I wanted inspiration...I got it! Now I have new people to work with, and lots of toys to play with! This is going to be fun!

Aren't guilds great fun! Where is your (what part of PA?) I used to live in State College (when I went back summer '05 I couldn't believe how things had changed since '96).

I started quilting 7 years ago - in Minnesota. It was such fun there because there are many guilds and lots and lots and lots of local quilt shops!

I'm in Berks County...just 1/2 mile from Lancaster County....lots of fabric stores in this area! I have three sons attending Penn State; two at the main campus. We've been season football ticket holders since '96 or '97!! Yes, many things have changed there...the one we like the best....the roads!

That was the first thing I noticed... coming in 322 from the west... that HUGE overpass -- oh my goodness... couldn't believe it!

When we were in State College -- my DS#3 spent 6 weeks at Hershey Medical Center

-- and we spent LOTS of hours (January - February '94 UGH... lots of snow and ice) driving 322 from Hershey to State College. Is it any better through 7 Mountains... that was so treacherous at time...

I'd love to get back to Amish country some day... was there a few times... but before I was a quilter... need to go back with a different perspective.

Wow! You made quite a haul, Alice!

I've never heard of a guild limiting members before. Is it because of a small meeting place?

The guild here in Boca Raton limits their membership to 200. There are a lot of folks on the waiting list. I think they should split into 2 groups or more to accomodate everyone, especially me.

Why do guilds limit their membership to 50 or 200 or whatever?

Yes, it's 4 lane through the mountains. They're now working on "The Narrows" (8 miles along the river), and expect to be finished in 2008. Then there will only be one section of two lane left! One of our boys graduated from PSU in Dec. 2000, and is now back completing his MBA. Our youngest is a Junior, and the oldest is working on his Masters degree at Penn State/Great Valley. I guess I need to change my Webshots user name.

I'm not sure about the size of the meeting place, but I was told limiting the size keeps it a more personal group, where you can get to know most everyone.

The guild I want to join in my area has a waiting list as well. I can still attend most meetings as a guest but I cannot sign out books, participate in classes or workshops or any of the block of the month, round robin, challenges and such. It really sucks and I am told it may be two more years until there is 'room" for me but I am thankful that I can at least attend the meetings for now. I feel like such an outsider LOL
