Focus on Design Card trick and Doreen Speckmann

I think part of the reason we don't see much on card trick because Dorren Speckmann made the definitive card quick quilt....

Ahhhh Doreen. I wonder what she would be doing today? She'd have us laughing, whatever it was. Do you think she would be won over to the rotary cutter yet? Or would she still be using templates and rubber cement? Our guild was one of the very last ones to have her as a speaker. From here she was leaving for her trip to ...Ireland?....where she died while line dancing. There had been some hints of ill health when she was here....she asked someone about chest pains or something similar. Hindsight. I believe she was told to see a doctor, but she was the type who wouldn't.

She was certainly a "card" herself....We had her come for a workshop and lecture and I saw her once before and once after that ...then she passed away, certainly a wonderful voice lost, but I still refer to her book "Pattern Play" often, for quotes, I always loved the one that she said and I paraphrase, if you start quilting the first thing you should do is take a second mortgage out, you're gonna need it to buy fabric ....once you get the bug....What a joyful sense of humor....My other favorite story about her, was the one she told about winning at Paducah.....she was so thrilled and puffed up until she turned the corner to see where it was hung, and there it was in all its pieced graphic simplicity next to an EXTREMELY intricate applique quilt....."GEEEZ" and I quote.....this just happened to me at our local show ...I finally managed to get a large quilt finished and into our show....I was happy to enter....didn't win anything BUT the quilt hanging next to mine was made of about 500 -6" blocks with about 100 pieces in each block!!!!!!!!! GOOD GRIEF>>>>
