further crap and nonsense

ok...well, I made a baby quilt for a friend's newborn....progress

Today, however, we got hit by a curveball....not totally unexpected, but still.....as of this morning, DS has officially been diagnosed with Aspergers {sigh}. So, now we start the battle all over again.

School said in the fall that they wanted to take him off his IEP completely....I got them to continue his current IEP until we had confirmation or refutation of the provisional diagnosis of Aspergers that he was given by the psych that he saw outside of the school system. They agreed (after LOTS of attitude and upset feelings and such). So....now we have to schedule another meeting....but I won't bother letting them know anything until we actually ahve the doctor's notes and suggestions for his IEP. Well, the principal and vice principal know, but I haven't notified pupil services yet.

So....I'm so freaked right now...it's mixed blessing.....yay for getting the diagnosis...boo for having to deal with the school again........gah

I have 2 customer orders awaiting my attention, buttons to sew on a shirt that I made for hubby, fabric to press for a surprise dress for DD, 2 crochet projects and 2 knitting projects....to say I'm scattered is an understatement.....but tomorrow I have a one on one beginner knitting lesson to make sure that I'm doing things correctly and not bass-ackwards {sigh}

and on a related topic...the teacher took a threatening tone with son this morning, and I made it clear that this is typical for her because she runs her class with bullying and intimidation tactics - and I said this while we were in the principal's office. He asked to be removed from her class and I pointed out that every time we've asked, they have refused, and with only 1.5 months left, it would be pointless....again, said in the principal's office.....

So...there we go......trying to get back to a semblance of normalcy.....hoping to get back to regular sewing and quilting in the near future.....DD wants a mommy-made quilt, twin-sized to fit her big girl bed :-)....now to find the correct pattern for her....already have the fabrics.......

Hang in there, it will be worth the hassle.

Prayers on the way.

Wish we lived closed by....I would help you with something for sure. One thing at a time and then let it be but I know that's hard when there's people who put on their own dead- lines.

Hugs and prayers and peace of mind to you.

You win some, you lose some... The diagnosis is handy as people/schools/systems then know something of what to expect. But it's a handicap as many then lower their expectations of the kid... Which is groosly unfair, as many in the spectrum have high functionality, even if it may be on a parallel track to the rest of the boring 'normal' people. You have to keep them on the ball all the time, and it's a struggle that you shouldn't have to keep having. So while I am glad you have the diagnosis and the road ahead is there, if still not yest clear (much will depend where in the Aspergers spectrum he falls), I am sorry you have all this to deal with, and find it hard to comprehend why it has all taken so long, when you the parents have known DS is not as other kids all along. There's nowt wrong with him: he's just 'differently correct'. ;) ((((((((((Larisa & Co))))))))))

The quilt plans sound great, and DD sounds like she has her head on the right way up where Mummy Made Quilty Goodness is concerned.

Larisa,

Have you been in contact with varc.org It's the Virginia autism research center at the VA Commonwealth University in Richmond?

It used to be located in Winchester at Grafton Inc. , which is a school that began as a school for autistic children.

Also, I've just read Temple Grandon's autobiography, had to buy the movie, and three of her other books. I got interested after I watched her do an hour and a half interview on Book TV last year. Outstanding woman!

I learned about varc over this past week end when I told Jim about your DS, he asked me if you were in contact with varc. He knows about varc because he woks in the IT department at Grafton and varc was located there when he started working there.
