Graduation quilty gift?

My great niece (college, U of ILL) and great nephew (high school) are graduating in June? Can I get a little quilt done for each by then

>>>and what? My thought s swirl...any of you brilliant women have an

idea? I don't know either well enough for a big quilt, heck I haven't a clue for colors.....but how about a little quilt that says "Celebrate" ( not just graduation, but life in general) on a pieced background? Or just a check or pen and pencil set (trite I know ,and old fashioned) ?? mauvice in central WI

How about something smaller, like a quilted laptop bag with a matching phone or Ipod holder -you could put "Celebrate" or anything else you like, since the bag would be at lease as big as a couple of large-ish quilt blocks. But more feasible in the time frame. Roberta in D

I like the wall hanging idea... and Celebrate is perfect!! the colors could be their HS / College colors .... or ask their parents what colors they decorated their bedroom in (at that age -- they usually have what THEY like in their own bedroom).

Whatever you do, DO something. I remember well how excited our own were about graduation good-wishes. We expected them to go set up camp out by the mailbox. They were so thrilled with every card, every letter. Even the gifts of awful cologne and dress shirts that they wouldn't wear to paint the doghouse were joyfully welcomed. You're running a little late and won't have time for huge projects, so get going. Polly

this is kind of what I had in mind ...a pieced background with CELEBRATE in big letters across it...maybe conversion pieced background, interesting but easy enough to complete X 2 in 5 weeks...this is such short notice, I don't keep in contact with this family but only once a year, and then the family info is sketchy,....more reminiscing conversation.... Instead of letters on a pieced background (to save time) how about a centre large square with the word Celebrate on in large letters, with

6", say, blocks around the outside. The centre could be any size that would accommodate 6" finished blocks - 12, 18, 24, 30 ... whatever size you wanted to make. Or, you could start making blocks and see how many you get done by the middle of May perhaps, and make the centre to suit the number of blocks you've managed to make? . No idea, but this brought back memories of a dinner I was at a few years ago that had Suzanne Marshall as a speaker. She made her DS a graduation quilt to take to college-----on the back was a tag that said "not under my quilt you don't"!!!!!!!!!!! Gen

What about using their school colors? That's what I did for my nephew's quilt two years ago. He loved it!
