Guild meeting ideas

Our speaker just cancelled, with only a 5 day notice....any suggestions for filling up the void for Tuesday night?

Thanks, Nancy

How about getting on the phone and getting 5 or 6 (or more depending upon the size of your guild) - to do a demo? People are always looking for new ideas on how to do things...

Here are a few suggestions:

1) the flying geese method where you start with a large square and 4 small squares and it makes four geese unit at a time... See method B here:

2) how to finish your binding with no over lap

3) John Flynn's diagonally pieced back (his instructions are a bit confusing -- but this site makes it make sense -- at least to me)

4) Paper piecing demo (using the 1/4" ruler ) seems like Paper Piecing scares off a lot of people -- but really isn't that difficult

5) Prairie points is always fun

6) How to resize blocks (just break down the units and do the math!)

That's a few ideas to get you started... I'm sure you have many resident "experts" who would have ideas... new tools or rulers to demonstrate... Check with your local shops -- they may have ideas, too!

"Worse" case scenario -- just a sit - n - stitch where people bring projects from home and just chat.

Good luck -- I'm sure you'll find just the right idea.

W-a-i-t ! How much help can you get? Heaps of us enjoyed the 'snap bags' adventure. It started here on 4/24 if you need to go back for instructions and assorted questions, thoughts and experiments. You could take some bags for your members to play with and admire, as well as demonstrate how to cut, round edges and apply duct tape. They're fun to give or have and quite an unexpected detour. Things that my guild always likes:

Fabric swap! Bring in your uglies/unwanteds and swap for something you like better. It's a good way to clean out your stash to make room for new stuff! :)

Tips and tricks! Bring in a new tip or technique that you like to use for quilting that others may not have heard of (or repeat a good tip that they may have forgotten). Bring in a tool or gadget that makes quilting easier.

Do you have instructions for this, or a site were directions are available? Gen

Gen, here's the method I use. I don't know if it's the same as Kate's, but it works for me!

How are your fingers doing?

Howdy!

The officers could show their first or oldest quilts, as well as a more recent one (our guild officers are always willing to pitch in). Do some interviews of your local, in-guild talent. Too often we overlook the treasures in our own group as the program chair books nationally-known speakers/quilters.

W/ the money you saved (not paying the planned speaker), gather up some nice door prizes, being generous to the guild members.

Good luck!

R/Sandy- also urging you to serve chocolate to those who might feel put-out at missing the original speaker ;->

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I think we're going to do a game of First quilt-Last quilt, where members bring an earlier creation and then a later creation, and members try to guess who's is who's.
