Help Wanted... Definitely On Topic

I can't believe that my guild didn't give a ribbon to our viewer's choice winner. I know it was our first show -- but still... We only had one winner! We should have... and I don't think having one next month would be too late. (She was just announced at tonight's meeting.)

I was fortunate to win viewer's choice a few years ago -- and let me tell you how proud I am of that ribbon!

Okay -- now for the Help!

I can make quilts... but when it comes to making a ribbon -- I don't know where to start. I've looked at mine -- and the girl that made them was really talented. I'd like to do something similar -- but don't have a clue on how to create a circular ruffle?

I'd like to make one similar to the ones I got -- give me 24 hours and I'll get a picture on my webshots page... but until then....

Does anyone have any great ideas for a really special ribbon -- that I might be able to make? (remember -- I do almost always straight line sewing -- so anything else scares the be-jeebers out of me!)

Thanks in advance!

OTOH - buying a really nice ribbon isn't that big a deal. One year, a 5 year-old nephew and I decided that our neighborhood had done some very special Christmas lighting/decorating and thought they deserved recognition. I located the shop that does the ribbons and trophies for T-ball, baton twirling and county fair pickles; chose some really fine ribbons and the cost was very small. That little guy awarding ribbons: priceless. Polly

ok, that is very true, what a clever wee lad you got there, Polly.

now i did a google and so far havent found what i want but have had some thots on making one.

using wide stiffish satin ribbon or something akin to that, use a piece of ribbon long enough (no idea how long that might be, (maybe double+ the circumference of the circle mentioned below) fold ribbon in half lengthwise (do not crease fold) and using sewing machine, baste pleats (along raw edge)making it into a circle as you go, insert raw edges between front and back (around) of cardboard covered with and padded slightly? satin circles. (reread it til it makes sense if need be, sorry best i can manage now).

for hanging ribbon bit... with double length(how far do you want it hanging down) of the right width ribbon (fold in half widthwise) and snip ends by folding a bit(about an inch or so from bottom) in half and hold til you snip up an inch or so from raw edge towards the folded edge, then let go of the fold. ya should then have end of ribbon like a forked tongue (hope that makes sense too).

i can see that perfectly but maybe no one else can, sorry bout that. then you'd need a way to join up all those bits, the 2 circles, the pleated ribbon part and the hanging ribbon part, maybe a hot glue gun would work? now if you can print the right wording on the circle satin that would be good or maybe just write it on with a micron fabric pen would work. how about glueing a pin thingy on the back too. ok, i'm going back to google some more. j.

Micron fabric pen doesn't write on satin ribbon very well -- but it does better than Sharpie! Test first if you are thinking of writing on the ribbon. *Before* you use it to make your award ribbon!

I think there is a reason people tend to buy these things. There may even be a pre-printed "viewers choice" you can buy!

I have seen nice quilt show awards done by making a small quilt block (think coaster size) and then adding two wide ribbons coming off the bottom (sew them onto the back). I think a star quilt block looks especially nice for this. Depending on how you add the ribbons the block can be straight or 'on point'.

Hope this makes sense!

Thanks all for the great ideas... and the links. I am SO a visual learner... so those websites are really helpful.

When (if???) I get something done -- I'll be sure to post back!

Oh, that sounds a whole lot easier to make! And we *know* how Pigma pens behave on cotton!

Dragonfly (Pam) - who will try to remember this idea if she ever needs to make a ribbon.

W-a-i-t ! Viewer's Choice is the most wonderful honor of all. We'll want just a little tacky glitz. ( 'Bling' if you must.) Please add a few sequins or bugle beads. The ribbon just has to have some 'ta-dah'. IMHO, of course. Polly

Kate: Just back from Florida, and I noticed your message just as I was going to click 'all read' function. So, I am coming late to the conversation, but this suggestion may help you. For a challenge my guild did a few years ago, a member made **gorgeous** ruched flowers for the rosette part. Another member embroidered the title (Viewers Choice, Etc.) on fabric streamers for the rosette. You may have guild members who can supply talent to make the ribbons. HTH.
