Help with Flannel selection?

I bought pale yellow flannel from Hancock's to back a baby quilt. I washed it (on delicate), line dried it to 80% dry, then fluffed it on low heat in the dryer to finish drying.

Gosh, this flannel now looks kind of "pilled", and looks like its been washed thirty times.

I really don't want to use it now. Can anyone suggest a quality solid that might hold up better?

Thanks!

So glad you asked. It's one of the few subjects where I have lots of experience. You've said what gentle washing you did with the flannel. Just imagine what would happen when Daddy 'helps' with the laundry and tosses your quilt in hot water. You just never know with flannel; some of it has a staggering price and will turn into fuzz pills at first wash. I like to use it for receiving blankets for NIN but sometimes am surprised that the EPA hasn't fined me for being a fuzz hazard. A lot depends on the moon and assorted other variables but lately I've been pleased with Northcott's 'Emma Louise & Ethan Michael' line of flannel. The prints are adorable and the quality is pretty good. Polly

In addition to Polly's excellent advice- she's our resident flannel and baby quilt expert- I would say do not use gentle for *anything* that will go into a baby's quilt. Assume it's gonna get rough use and many washes. Start right off with a hot wash and high dryer heat. You want to know how ALL the fabrics and the batting and thread will hold up *before* you start the quilt.

Good luck finding the perfect flannel.

Oh... you are just TOO easy!

Howdy!

Northcott's flannel (brushed cotton) has worked well for me. In the past couple of years I've used it several times for quilts for friends going thru' cancer treatments. It fluffs up nicely, stays soft, holds up in the (regular) wash, with Hobbs Thermore batting to keep it from getting to heavy. Better luck next time, Sherry.
