Hokie Hope Quilts

Here are some of the quilts made here on the Virginia Peninsula for the 32 families who lost a loved one to murder at Virginia Tech on 16 April 2007.

The one I made is number 0089, third row, center. The appliqué, VTCC, stands for Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets. I made the quilt specifically to honor the Cadet who died. Cadet LaPorte was in Band Company, the prestigious Highty Tightys Cadet Band, so I included a piece of musical note fabric in each star. The star centers and the side borders have Tech Logo fabric. The backing is orange. It was an honor to be a part of this project.

All of the quilts are so lovely. As for the one that you made, I'm so glad that you were able to add that "special" touch by using the musical note fabric. It makes the quilt that much more special/personalised.

The families of those students will never get over the pain but having a remembrance quilt to hug will be a comfort. We are grateful, Pat, for your part in this compassionate sharing of their grief. Polly

Thank you for sending the link to all those quilts, Pat - it was a sad day....My sister and bro/law were driving the highway that morning during the event and they said that the ground was shaking from the number of high speed police cars heading to the university - it wasn't until they had reached a safe rest stop that they were able to tune into a radio station to listen to the news that they knew what had happened so close to them. jennellh

Pat, they're all lovely -- the simple ones, the more complex ones, all of them. What a wonderful tribute to those students who so tragically were in harm's way. Was each quilt made for a specific student's family, or just some?

Sandy: Only a few were made for specific families from the get-go. The others were assigned later. BTW: some of the families lost a faculty member, and some lost a student. PAT PS: I hope I caught/cancelled my post with name error in time! Post in haste ... repent at leisure!

These are all just wonderful, Pat. What a lovely, caring, beautiful thing to do for all of the grieving families. Blessings to them all, and may they feel the warmth and comfort of those quilts for many years.

What a dumb mistake on my part! Of *course* I knew that there were faculty members lost that day, as well as students. Sorry! :S

I didn't notice an error, so you must have!
